Listeria monocytogenes — A Promising Vaccine Carrier to Evoke Cellular Immune Responses

Carlos A. Guzman; Siegfried Weiss; Trinad Chakraborty

Listeria monocytogenes is a facultative intracellular Gram-positive pathogen, which has been considered as a prototype for intracytoplasmically growing parasites. Listeria spp. have been implicated in severe infections in both human and animals, which are particularly severe for newborns and immunocompromised individuals. This microorganism has also been used as a model for the study of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I-restricted immune responses. Recent studies highlight the potential of this microorganism as an antigen delivery system where MHC class-I restricted immune responses are required.
