Unidimensional scale for dementia

Jun Tanemura; Tsuneo Hasegawa; Eisei Oda; Taro Muramatsu; Tadashi Kusunoki

A cognitive test comprising 27 subscales was administered to 262 demented patients and 92 normal subjects. Principal factor analysis followed by varimax and Harris-Kaiser rotation and Guttman’s scalogram analysis was performed. The analysis yielded three factors, i.e. ‘recent memory’, ‘immediate memory or attention’ and ‘remote memory’. The relationships between the three-dimensional distribution of the scores and the DSM-IIIR grade of dementia indicated the existence of a continuum of dementia severity. Scalogram analysis showed unidimensionality in the difficulty level of the subscales as well as in the severity of the cases. Thus, the simple summary score can be used as a good measure of the severity of dementia.

Cephalic blood flow: A study of the dynamics of vertebral artery reversed flow in the dog

Richard Janeway; Masahiro Kato; Robert Bond; Tsuneo Hasegawa

BECAUSE LITTLE INFORMATION is available describing total cephalic blood flow values, this report details the results of its measurement under varying conditions in order to gain an understanding of the dynamics of the extracranial portions of the cerebral and cephalic circulation. Our measurements define the changes in cephalic blood flow after occlusion of the proximal portion of the right subclavian artery, the major result of which is the causation of reversed blood flow in the right vertebral artery.

Cerebral vascular disease and its microcirculation.

Toyozo Aizawa; Tsuneo Hasegawa; Kosuke Mori

From Keio University, Tokyo, Japan. * Professor, Department of Internal Medicine. † Department of Internal Medicine. Cerebral vascular diseases, the most frequent cause of death in Japan for the last 15 years, causes more than 20% of the total deaths. Thus, the pursuance of their pathogenesis and establishment of more definite therapy have become one of the most important subjects of the medical research in this country. Regarding their pathogenesis, a number of theories have been hitherto proposed. Among them, the theory of cerebral vascular rupture for cerebral hemorrhage (Charcot and Bouchard,’Staululler,2 Spatz,3 Matsuoka4), and that of thrombus formation in intra or extra cerebral arteries for cerebral thrombosis
