abstract The morphology of the agriculture-based deltaic settlement in the Western Basin of Chaophraya Delta is explained through an analysis of the correlation between the following factors; topographical conditions and historical and social background. This also reflected the production from land development, and the settlement formation process. We separated the pattern of settlement formation into 3 types; (1) Multi-centric network settlement, (2) Strip-axis settlement, and (3) Single-centric settlement. These were then classified through consideration of an analysis process on the geographical section of the north-south and west-east axis of the Delta. As well as adapting to the deltaic topographical features, it could be considered that the patterns and transformation process of these settlements were based in paralleled with; (1) initiation of the Phrai system, and (2) a declination of the Phrai system. The Chinese traders, who organized the waterfront market network, could also be considered the key persons who motivated this process. It could be considered that the multi-centric network settlement was developed under the influence of the Phrai system, while the fish-bone type strip-axis settlement was developed after a declination of the Phrai system.

Abstract It is the purpose of this study to examine the domestic space arrangement of the private rental housings in kampung (urban village) settlement. Kampung Ngentak Sapen, an urban periphery settlement at Yogyakarta, Indonesia was selected as a case study due to the occurrence of a lot of its houses, which were gradually expanded to be a private rental housing. This study focused on how the households re-arrange their domestic space to be shared with the tenants. Besides, the implication of this change on spatial occupation within a private rental housing will be discussed. Investigations found that the occupation adjustment, spatial adjustment and extension of the original housing processes have developed the private rental housings. The domestic space arrangement of the private rental housing could be categorized into maximum separation, moderate separation, and minimum separation based on the number of spaces which might be interchangeably used by both the household and the tenants.

abstract Qianlong Jingcheng Quantu, the oldest map of Beijing drawn in the Qianlong period (1750), depicts various institutional facilities and Beijing courtyard houses known as siheyuan in the inner city of Beijin. The city is composed of innumerable siheyuans and facilities built in siheyuan type architecture. This siheyuan type is related to the pattern of block division and its subdivision in the larger scheme of the city plan. Firstly, this paper, making an analysis of maps and literature, identifies a chronological order in the development of the street patterns, and then considers the connection of the siheyuan type with respect to the size of residential plots. The research then discusses the transformation process of the Beijing courtyard residences that occurred through the subsequent subdivision of the initial dwelling plots. This paper, thus, aims to illustrate the historical formation and transformation of physical environment of the Inner City of Beijing that may serve as an important basis to develop guidelines to the conservation of the historic environment of Beijing.

Abstract The objective of this study was to observe the arrangements of coastal housing settlements, their domestic spatial arrangements, and the transformations that occurred after the Sumatra earthquake and tsunami of 2004. The study focused on recovery-related resettlement and relocation programs, as well as the problems that arose during the reconstruction processes. The implications of resettlement and relocation on changes to domestic spatial arrangements and availability, in addition to community adaptations to the changing living environment were also investigated. Furthermore, the factors that need to be considered to ensure the effectiveness of future reconstruction efforts following disasters were analyzed. We also determined that housing structural quality, local living environment organizations and coastline regulations were the primary factors that mitigated the effects of the tsunami along the Sri Lankan coastline.
