A New Non-Intrusive Optical Technique to Measure Transparent Liquid Level and Volume

Hidam Kumarjit Singh; Sumit Kumar Chakroborty; Hriday Talukdar; Nungleppam Monoranjan Singh; Tulshi Bezboruah

We report here a novel optical technique for the continuous measurement of the level and the volume of transparent liquids in a cylindrical container. This measurement technique is based on the principle of liquid level induced modulation in the solid angle of a divergent light beam incident on liquid surface. This technique has advantages of being a very sensitive and non-intrusive way of measurement. The proposed technique has been experimentally tested with clean water, colored water, diluted glycerin, and pure glycerin by using liquid containers having 100-, 250-, and 500-mL capacity. Measurement results provide the highest sensitivity in the case of a container having smallest diameter. The proposed system is capable of measuring the liquid level and volume with approximate resolutions down to 3.2 μm and 6.2 μL, respectively, in the case of a 100-mL container. The sensitivity is found to decrease with the increasing diameter of the container as well as with the decreasing optical transparency of the liquids, but increase with the increasing refractive indices of transparent liquids. And this technique has an appreciably larger dynamic range of measurement, good linearity, and repeatability in the measurement responses.

Investigation on performance testing and evaluation of PReWebD: a .NET technique for implementing web application

Mitashree Kalita; Tulshi Bezboruah

A prototype research web application based on Visual Studio platform is developed with .NET as framework, Internet Information Server (IIS) (Version: 5.1) as web server and Microsoft Standard Query Language (SQL) Server (Version: 2005) as database server to study the performance and evaluation of the .NET technique used for developing the web application. The authors call it the PReWebD. As the performance is one of the most important features of a web application, to evaluate the performance, testing of PReWebD has been carried out using Mercury LoadRunner (Version 8.0) for validation and to study some other attributes like scalability, reliability etc. The performance depends on parameters such as hits/s, response time, throughput, errors/s etc. These parameters for PReWebD are tested with different stress levels. The statistical testing and analysis is done to assure the stability, reliability and quality of the application. Here the authors report in details the architecture, testing procedure, result of performance testing as well as the results of statistical analysis on recorded data of PReWebD.

A truly nonintrusive optical sensing method suitable for accurate and precise measurement of liquid level is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. Sensing principle of the proposed method is based on the phenomenon of lateral displacement effect, which is observed when oblique light rays propagate through material media with different thicknesses and refractive indices. Experimental results of this method demonstrate its ability to measure liquid level very precisely up to a resolution of about 40-50 μm. The proposed method has the potential for use in in situ measurement of liquid level and volume. It can also be exploited for measurement of refractive index of liquid.

Tulshi Bezboruah; K. Boruah; P.K. Boruah

Abstract A mini array of eight plastic scinitillators (Bicron B-416) each viewed by photomultiplier tubes (EMI 9807B) covering a total carpet area of 2 m 2 is installed in the roof of the Physics Building, Gauhati University, for the study of Giant Extensive Air Showers produced by UHE cosmic rays in the atmosphere. All the eight detectors are connected to a data acquisition system capable of recording arrival time spread of secondary particles up to 2.5 μs. Fast electronic circuits are employed to measure the density of shower particles as well as their arrival time spread with a resolution of 10 ns. The array is in operation since September 1996. We present here the method in detail and a theoretical estimation of the measured parameters.

Investigations on implementation of web applications with different techniques

Mitashree Kalita; Tulshi Bezboruah

Investigations on implementation of web application with different techniques are essential for developers’ as well as users’ perspective. As such, the authors propose to investigate the same by implementing two prototype research web applications based on two different implementation techniques. One of the web applications has been implemented based on the Microsoft .NET technique and the other based on the Java technique. Our objective is to carry out a detailed comparative study of both the techniques in terms of efficiency, reliability, performance, scalability, stability and time to market features of both the techniques. Load and stress testing are performed for both the web applications using Mercury LoadRunner. The statistical analysis of recorded data for both the applications is carried out to study the feasibility of the work. In this study, the authors present in detail the results of the authors’ comparative study on the two techniques.

Subhash Medhi; Tulshi Bezboruah

Web service is accepted by all communities of services due to its interoperability, flexibility of design and architecture. Improving performance is the key research point for developers and researchers. We propose to design, develop and implement a prototype research electronic automated teller machine web service to study the loads, performance and scalability of the service. The service is based on Visual Studio .NET framework. It is developed by using C# as programming language, Internet Information Service (Version: 2005) as web server and, Microsoft Structured Query Language as database server. To study its different aspects the service has been tested by deploying it on Mercury LoadRunner (Version 8.1). In this paper we will present the architecture, testing procedure, results of performance testing as well as results of statistical analysis on recorded data of the service.

Non-Intrusive Technique for Measuring Refractive Index of Clear and Transparent Liquids

Hidam Kumarjit Singh; Nabadweep Chamuah; Deepanjan Sarkar; Tulshi Bezboruah

We propose an optical technique for measuring refractive index of clear and transparent liquids. This technique senses change in refractive index of liquid by virtue of lateral displacement of a light beam that occurs due to refraction of the light beam after passing through the liquid medium. The transmitted light beam gradually looses its alignment with a photodetector as refractive index of the liquid changes. Experimental results have indicated that the proposed technique has the potential to measure refractive indexes with an accuracy of 10-4, and it has novelty of being a simple and non-intrusive one.

Micro-controller based frequency to digital converter for interfacing frequency output sensors

Hidam Kumarjit Singh; Tulshi Bezboruah

We present the design and testing of a 16-bit frequency to digital converter, based on AT89C51 micro-controller, for use in sensing applications. The system generates digital equivalents of frequencies by counting negative transitions of transistor transistor logic signal applied to a designated input of the microcontrollers on-chip counter. The system digitizes frequencies of signal generated from a frequency generator, while the digitized data are logged in a personnel computer via printer port by using a LabVIEW program. The system is found to have a linear response over a large dynamic range of conversion, and its resolution is tunable down to 1.6 Hz. The proposed system can be used as interface circuit for frequency output sensors without relying on frequency to voltage converter and analog to digital converter.

Tulshi Bezboruah; Abhijit Bora

Evaluating the implementation techniques of web service and analysing their performance in load balancing cluster-based and non-cluster-based web server is necessary from the perspective of web service developer, researchers as well as users. As such the authors propose to develop and implement a SOAP based hierarchical web service using load balancing cluster-based and non-cluster based Apache Tomcat web server to study the web service performance metrics. The performance of overall system is tested using the load testing tool Mercury Load runner and a comparative investigation is carried out using the stability, load and performance metrics of both services. In this paper, the authors present, in detail, the methodology of experiment, comparative testing results, and statistical analysis on performance metrics.

Some aspects of QoS for interoperability of multi service multi functional service oriented computing

Abhijit Bora; Tulshi Bezboruah

Quality of service is the key indicator for service oriented architectures, because it directly expresses the operability and computational nature of the system. As such, we propose a quality evaluation framework for multi service multi functional hierarchical SOAP based web service. The overall interoperable quality is evaluated through load testing using Mercury Load Runner with Apache Tomcat web server and MySQL database engine. The recorded quality metrics are analyzed statistically. We present here in detail the architecture, observed metrics and analyzed results of the service oriented computing to validate the acceptability of the evaluation framework.
