The most common conditions of the musculoskeletal system of draft equidae in the city of Belo Horizonte were determined. Fifty-eight animals (42 horses and 16 mules) were randomly examined, being 31 males and 27 females. Diagnosis was based on history, clinical and radiological examinations. The frequency observed for tenosynovitis in the fore and hindlimbs was 55.2%, 81.0%, for tendinitis in the forelimbs, 58.6% for tendinitis in the himblimbs, and 77.6% for suspensory ligament desmitis in the forelimbs. The results showed 13.8%, 12.1%, 27.6% and 12.1% of osteoarthritic lesions for distal interphalangeal joint of fore and hindlimbs and proximal interphalangeal joint of fore and hindlimbs, respectively. In the fetlock joints of the forelimbs, the incidence was 41.4%, and 39.7% in the hindlimbs. The incidence increased in the carpal joints, reaching 62.1% and it was even higher in the tarsal joints, reaching 96.6%. Findings in soft tissues indicated an overloading of both suspensory and flexor apparatus. Osteoarthritis was a common finding in draft equine, especially in tarsal joint. In both cases, the activity developed by those animals seems to be the main related cause.

The effect of three different enema solutions on clinical parameters of equines was studied using 15 healthy adult animals. They were alloted into three groups of five animals each: group 1 - treated with tap water associated with neuter soap; group 2 -treated with isotonic solution; and group 3 - treated with tap water associated with vaseline. Effects of enema solutions on clinical parameters were observed. Isotonic solution caused less alteration on clinical parameters. Tap water and soap enema induced inflammatory reaction on colon mucosa. Even though all three solutions showed effectiveness in hydrating and softening the feces, the treatment with water plus soap showed the best results.

One case of icterus iris diagnosed in an American Paint Horse is described. Stiffness, painful muscle, reluctance to move, elevated respiratory and heart rates, and icterus iris were observed in the clinical examination. Creatine kinase, aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, and bilirubin levels were markedly elevated. Exertional rhabdomyolysis syndrome was diagnosed. Analgesic therapy, fluid therapy, and limited exercise were prescribed. After six days there was a remission of clinical signs and return the original color of the iris.

Three cases of airway recurrent obstruction in approximately 10-year-old mules are reported. The animals were raised free and used for marching competitions. After being stabled in boxes under a wood scrape bed and fed on tifton and alfalfa hay plus a commercial ration, they started to show intolerance to exercise and episodes of coughing during it. After clinical and laboratorial examinations, clenbuterol, dexametazone and bromexine were administrated, besides controlling the environment. After 21 days of treatment, the clinical symptoms ceased. In order to certify that diagnosis, the animals were submitted to an environmental challenge for two days. Then, the animals were back to their normal athletic activities in a satisfactory manner.
