New dimensions of outsourcing: a combination of transaction cost economics and the core competencies concept

Ulli Arnold

Abstract The outsourcing discussion covers a well known area. The relevant literature refers to a situation which is traditionally well known in theory and practice as “make or buy” decision. But it is necessary to concentrate on the economic factors of outsourcing decision. This paper contains a real and detailed analysis of the outsourcing problem. Besides its generic base, we develop an outsourcing model with design alternatives based on institutional economic theory and work out an explanatory approach and concrete recommendations for outsourcing arrangements. Therefore, we combine transaction cost economics and core competencies approach. As a result, the managerial applications of both approaches are compatible.

Organization of global sourcing: ways towards an optimal degree of centralization

Ulli Arnold

Abstract Global sourcing is one of the most discussed aspects of supply chain management. Previous research in the field of purchasing focused on the strategic aspects of “going international”. In this paper, we want to concentrate on structural aspects of global sourcing, especially the degree of centralization of the global souring organization. Therefore, we use a combined theoretical and empirical methodology (case studies). This leads to three ideal organizational types for global sourcing which are described in detail.

Industrialization Strategy Based on Import Substitution Trade Policy

Houssam-Eddine Bessam; Rainer Gadow; Ulli Arnold

Industrialization is the main hope for most poor countries trying to increase their levels of income. Industrialization through import substitution (ISI) is one among many industrialization strategies. It is a relatively old strategy which was applied early during the industrialization of Western Europe. It is based on the protectionism of the domestic production capacity. It was later applied by Latin American nations since the 1930s to speed up their industrialization process. The theoretical bases of the ISI were first developed by Raul Prebisch and Hans Singer in 1950 who suggested the procurement of production means to decrease the imports of manufactured goods in order to cope with the phenomenon of terms of trade deterioration of the LDCs. Several authors have stressed the ISI strategy aspects such as its economic measures (like taxation), its historical aspects and also the great case studies on it around the world in Latin America and south-east Asia. However, ISI was not studied at a microlevel, which is the company level, and nobody asked the question how one should operate a company in a country where the industrial strategy is ISI-oriented.

Globalisierung und Beschaffung

Ulli Arnold

Ulli Arnold; Michael Essig
