Applying software product lines to create customizable software-as-a-service applications

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is a new delivery model, whose basic idea is to provide applications to the customer on demand over the Internet. In contrast to older approaches SaaS promotes multi-tenancy as a tool to exploit economies-of-scale. This means that a single application instance serves multiple customers. However, the flexibility of an application to be adapted to individual tenants needs is a major requirement for the acceptance and success of such an application. Thus, the issue of flexibility of multi-tenancy applications is discussed in this paper. Furthermore, the goal of this paper is to analyze how Software Product Lines (SPL) can be utilized to create highly customizable SaaS applications. In order to achieve this goal a vision of an architectural model is presented. This model is supposed to support the creation of such applications.

A manifesto for effective process models

Effective process models, to result in effective processes, must be adapted to the unique needs of an organization. When done carefully, proper adaptation produces superior results. This article includes examples of successful application of process in different domains and scales. From these come a list of values and principles for effective process use.

Towards the systematic development of hybrid software development processes

Hybrid approaches for software and system development have become reality. Recent research shows the use of hybrid development approaches mainly grounded in experience and driven by pragmatism. At the same time, a vast number of success factors is known that influences process development and process use alike. However, even though industrial practice shows a need for hybrid development approaches and knowledge regarding the success factors is in place, a systematic approach to develop, deploy and tailor hybrid development approaches is missing. This paper reports on ongoing research that aims at developing a method to support the evidence-driven construction of hybrid development approaches. We provide an overview of the required method components and outline how hybrid development approaches can be deployed at the organizational level and tailored at the project level. We further give an overview of ongoing and completed studies supporting the methods construction and evaluation.

In this article we revisit some core concepts of the FRISCO report related to semiotics and the philosophical foundations of FRISCO. Starting from some earlier versions of the semiotic triangle we focus on its top corner labelled “conception” in its FRISCO version.

Governance und Compliance von Anfang an wirksam umsetzen

ZusammenfassungDie Anforderungen an Governance und Compliance betrieblicher Prozesse wachsen beständig. Viele Unternehmen nutzen dafür entsprechende Referenzmodelle wie CMMI für Entwicklung (CMMI-DEV) sowie COBIT für die übergreifende IT-Governance, doch bleibt die Wirksamkeit der entsprechenden Maßnahmen häufig auf die Dokumentationsebene beschränkt, ohne echten Nutzen für das Unternehmen zu schaffen. Bei geeigneter Nutzung können diese Referenzmodelle aber wesentlich dazu beitragen, Transparenz in die betrieblichen Abläufe zu bringen und sie besser an den Unternehmenszielen auszurichten. Entscheidend dafür ist, dass klar definierte betriebliche Zielsetzungen den Einsatz lenken und nicht die wortgetreue und vollständige Umsetzung der generisch formulierten Modellinhalte angestrebt wird.

Inhaltliche Erschließung des Bereichs ‚Sozialorientierte Gestaltung von Informationstechnik‘— Ein begriffsanalytischer Ansatz

Seit Ende der 80er Jahre findet an der TH Darmstadt regelmasig im Wintersemester ein interdisziplinares SeminarSozialorientierte Gestaltung von Informationstechnik(SOGIT) statt. Es wird von einer fachubergreifenden Veranstaltergruppe unter Federfuhrung des Fachbereichs Informatik angeboten und vor allem von Studenten der Informatik und der Wirtschaftsinformatik besucht. Es wendet sich jedoch im Rahmen der fachubergreifenden Lehre an der TH Darmstadt grundsatzlich an Studierende aller Fachbereiche, die sich fur Grundbegriffe von Technikfolgenabschatzung und sozialvertraglicher Technikgestaltung mit besonderem Bezug zur Informationstechnik interessieren.

Verzahnung von technisch-ökonomischen mit sozialorientierten Kriterien in der Gestaltung von Informationstechnik

Das Arbeitsfeld der sozialorientierten Gestaltung von Informationstechnik hat sich in den letzten Jahren derartig dynamisch entwickelt, das hier nicht ein reprasentativer Uberblick gegeben werden kann. Stattdessen wird vor allem betrachtet, welche Rollen verschiedene Disziplinen und interdisziplinare Ansatze in diesem Forschungsfeld haben, und es werden ausgewahlte Verfahren vorgestellt, mit denen technisch-okonomische mit sozialorientierten Kriterien zusammengefuhrt werden konnen.

Nebenfach-Curriculum "Sozialorientierte Gestaltung von Informationstechniken"

Ausgangspunkt der Uberlegungen ist ein Verstandnis von Informatik als angewandter und somit gesellschaftlich wirksamer Wissenschaft. Es werden die Konturen eines sich hieraus ergebenden. Integrationsfaches „Informatik und Gesellschaft“ skizziert und die Umsetzung dieser Uberlegungen in ein Nebenfach-Curriculum „Sozialorientierte Gestaltung von Informationstechniken“ an der TH Darmstadt uberblicksartig prasentiert. Erste Erfahrungen sowie einige Problembereiche bei der Etablierung eines solchen quer zu etablierten disziplinaren Hochschulstrukturen liegenden interdisziplinaren Ansatzes werden dargestellt und zum Schlus die nachsten Schritte zur Einrichtung des Nebenfach-Curriculums an der TH Darmstadt aufgezeigt.
