Identification of critical safety barriers in biogas facilities

Valeria Casson Moreno; Daniele Guglielmi; Valerio Cozzani

Abstract Biogas production is growing worldwide. At European level, biogas is among the renewable energy sources whose exploitation is progressing more. Important investments are planned in biogas upgrading facilities for the production of biomethane. The relevant increase in biogas production raises emerging risk issues associated to biogas facilities. In order to systematically explore the hazards related to biogas production and upgrading, a specific methodology (DyPASI - Dynamic Procedure for Hazard Identification) was applied. Despite the great variety of existing plants and components, it was possible to identify reference critical events and cause-consequence chains. The results were used to identify a set of safety barriers for accident prevention and mitigation in biogas production and upgrading facilities.

Hazard Identification in Process Technology

Valeria Casson Moreno; Valerio Cozzani

Hazard identification is the first step of quantitative risk analysis and risk assessment. In the present module, starting from its definition, hazard identification has been presented and a complete synopsis of hazard identification techniques has been proposed. Comparative methods, fundamentals methods, and failure logic methods have been synthetically described, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses.

Unit Operation and Storage Safety

Valeria Casson Moreno; Valerio Cozzani

Most of industrial activities imply operations such as process, transport, and storage of materials and chemicals whose use exposes human beings, environment, and properties to a risk due to their 1 , 2 : - Intrinsically hazardous properties, e.g., flammability/explosivity, acute and chronic toxicity, carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, teratogenicity, aquatic toxicity, biodegradability, persistence in the environment, reactivity and stability, etc.
