This article aims to encompass a study of function and body image of women undergoing bariatric surgery. Thus, were conducted a qualitative study based on the methodology of content analysis. From this, the implications existing in obesity and its consequences in the context of functioning and body image became clear .This article aims to encompass a study of function and body image of women who underwent bariatric surgery. Thus, were conducted a qualitative study based on the methodology of content analysis. It has been found from interviews with 20 patients from a specialized Public Health System Service from the city of Juiz de Fora / Minas Gerais, with mean age of 40 years old, who underwent surgery for 2.85 years and with mean weight loss of 74.1 kg, the intrinsic relationship between function and body image. This were expressed by the changes after weight loss, which were emerged in the following categories: recovery of bodily functions, autonomy to resume old roles (such as perform duties like housekeeping, work or face the same relationships in different ways), and risking new experiences. So, the research group began to experience feelings of satisfaction and positive self-esteem, not so far experienced.

Este trabalho se propos a descrever a percepcao de idosos institucionalizados sobre o papel do profissional psicologo junto a populacao abrigada das Instituicoes de Longa Permanencia para Idosos (ILPI) da cidade de Juiz de Fora-MG. O universo da pesquisa abrangeu as instituicoes cuidadoras e cadastradas junto ao Conselho Municipal do Idoso da referida localidade. Quanto a metodologia, procedeu-se a estudo qualitativo exploratorio utilizando a Analise de Conteudo na perspectiva de Bardin como ferramenta para o tratamento dos dados. Os criterios de inclusao utilizados foram: 1) ser residente em ILPI; 2) ter 60 ou mais anos de idade; 3) aceitar participar; e 4) ser capaz de responder as perguntas formuladas. Constitui-se amostra por conveniencia de 34 idosos que apresentaram as seguintes representacoes acerca do papel do psicologo: relevância e pertinencia de seu trabalho, nao percebendo a presenca de pontos negativos no trabalho deste profissional nas ILPIs. Identificou-se ainda que as areas de atuacao psicologica mais apontadas foram as relacionadas a prevencao, diagnostico e tratamento dos residentes naqueles locais.
