Micro-Holographic Storage and Threshold Holographic Recording Materials

Victor Petrovich Ostroverkhov; Brian Lee Lawrence; Xiaolei Shi; Eugene Pauling Boden; Christoph Georg Erben

This paper presents a new injection-molded holographic recording media with a threshold optical response that is specifically designed for single-bit holographic data storage. The concept of a threshold response in a holographic recording material is discussed and the benefits of such a material relative to standard linear materials are evaluated. Micro-holograms are recorded in the new material and the performance is compared to similar measurements in a linear material. The results show that the material has a threshold recording energy of approximately 1 µJ/pulse in a low-numerical-aperture (NA) test system, corresponding to 50 nJ/pulse in a high-NA system. In addition, the threshold material shows a 1000-fold improvement in continuous-wave (CW) read-out stability and a 25% reduction in hologram size as compared to the linear material.

Fiber optic cables have been successfully deployed in ocean floors for decades to enable trans-oceanic telecommunication. The impact of strain and moisture on optical fibers has been thoroughly studied in the past 30 years. Cable designs have been developed to minimize strain on the fibers and prevent water uptake. As a result, the failure rates of optical fibers in subsea telecommunication cables due to moisture and strain are negligible. However, the relatively recent use of fiber optic cables to monitor temperature, acoustics, and especially strain on subsea equipment adds new reliability challenges that need to be mitigated. This paper provides a brief overview of the design for reliability considerations of fiber optic cables for subsea asset condition monitoring (SACM). In particular, experimental results on fibers immersed in water under varying accelerated conditions of static stress and temperature are discussed. Based on the data, an assessment of the survivability of optical fibers in the subsea monitoring environment is presented.

Advances in micro-holographic materials and systems are presented. New materials show improved index change (10x) and sensitivity (100x) at >3x lower intensity vs. previously reported. Experimental results supporting single-sided optical drive concept is presented.
