Developments in unmanned powered parachute aerial vehicle: A review

Vindhya Devalla; Om Prakash

The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) defines an unmanned aircraft as the following: A powered vehicle that does not carry a human operator, can be operated remotely or autonomously, can be expendable or recoverable and can carry a lethal or non-lethal payload. Ballistic or semi ballistic vehicle, cruise missiles, artillery projectiles, torpedoes, mines, satellites and unattended sensors are not considered unmanned vehicles. Unmanned vehicles are the primary component of an unmanned system [1].

Development of position tracking and guidance system for Unmanned Powered Parafoil Aerial Vehicle

Vindhya Devalla; Amit Kumar Mondal; A. J. Arun Jeya Prakash; Om Prakash

An experimental Unmanned Powered Parafoil Aerial Vehicle (UPPAV) was developed to gather aerial data. Certain characteristics like low-speed, low-cost, and high stability makes the powered Parafoil a versatile and promising platform for surveillance and imaging applications. UPPAVs are easy to operate, robust and safe and have high flight duration. The developed UPPAV has a chassis fitted with a high torque Brushless DC motor, Servo motor and a Parafoil wing. This paper describes development of the position tracking and guidance system using the GPS unit placed on the chassis. It focuses on the extraction and transmission of the specific GPS values like longitude, Latitude and Altitude from the bulk values obtained. The GPS navigation system will provide continuous position of the system. These obtained values can be used by the pilot to maneuver the system to the desired location. The developed system mounted on the chassis consists of Microcontrollers, GPS, and 433 MHz transreceivers.

Performance analysis of a powered parafoil unmanned aerial vehicle using open loop flight test results and analytical results

Vindhya Devalla; Amit Kumar Mondal; Om Prakash

This paper presents an approach to design and develop an Unmanned Powered Parafoil Aerial Vehicle (UPPAV) to surveillance an area. The paper discusses in detail about the relation between Parafoil size and payload weight. Analytical calculations are done to understand the UPPAV performance. The performance results are then compared with open loop flight test results.

Development of a Damper Control System for Combined Cycle Thermal Gas Power Plant

Amit Kumar Mondal; Vindhya Devalla; Vivek Kaundal; Kamal Bansal

This paper addresses a technique to solve the problem of heat dissipation in solenoid coil of the solenoid valve which is controlling the hydraulic damper by using pulse width modulation (PWM) switching technique with low frequency. In addition to this damper controlling is achieved via wireless controlling. By using PWM based low frequency switching technique the gas turbine trip will be protected. PWM is achieved by microcontroller and wireless control is done by ZigBee.© 2014 ASME

Underwater Navigation Systems for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

Sachi Choudhary; Rashmi Sharma; Amit Kumar Mondal; Vindhya Devalla

Over the past few decades, researchers, navy of different countries and different organizations related to maritime archaeology, underwater mines & pipelines etc. had paid considerable attention towards underwater surveying & inspection by autonomous robot or vehicle. Considerable improvements for better AUV navigation have seen in different sensors in recent years. The sensors are available with not only improved performance but lesser cost and reduced size as well. In addition to these developments, huge improvements in path planning of AUVs have also seen with advanced navigation techniques & algorithm such as SLAM. This paper presents a survey on some important navigation systems for AUV. These techniques can be used to calculate the current position or to localize the robot/vehicle underwater.

Air Mouse: An Everyday Mouse for the Ease of Computing

P. S. Venkateswaran; Vivek Kaundal; Amit Kumar Mondal; Abhishek Sharma; Vindhya Devalla; Shival Dubey

There are several ways for human computer interaction in the modern era of electronics. In the present day, computers motion recognition is used very efficiently for playing games. The work done in this paper presents a simple and low-cost device for the movement of cursor on computer screen or to rotate the three-dimensional images. For the movement of cursor the data of accelerometer sensor (according to hand movement) is fed to the controller unit and after processing it is sent serially to the computer through RS 232 protocol. The developed device is used for all applications as accomplished with mouse. The proposed device senses the end user action with the help of accelerometer and push buttons. The air mouse is comfortable to wear, and does not considerably obstruct entering. It functions completely as serial mouse available in the market, and even has the feature of scrolling as the conventional mouse. This innovative approach improves the end user’s experience with day-to-day task and playing games in computer.

Comparative Analysis of Floating Aerogenerators

Amit Kumar Mondal; Ravi Kumar Patel; Abhishek Sharma; Vindhya Devalla; Surajit Mondal

This paper presents and compares several concepts of higher altitude wind energy exploitation. This new generation of systems employs tethered wings, aircrafts, multi-copters, balloons in order to harness the higher atmospheric winds. The comparison in this paper covers generators placed in ground as well as in air. From available concepts from literature, the most promising concepts were reproduced on the basis of moving mass (wings and tether), design, operational issues, techno- economic comparison. Key design and operational issues in developing and operating these systems are highlighted. A comparative analysis of floating type aerogenerators has been shown in this paper.
