Fractional Order Control and Simulation of Wind-Biomass Isolated Hybrid Power System Using Particle Swarm Optimization

Tarkeshwar Mahto; Hasmat Malik; Vivekananda Mukherjee

In this work, a fractional order (FO) proportional–integral–derivative (PID) (FO-PID) controller is considered for load-frequency control (LFC) of the isolated hybrid power system, comprising of a biomass-based diesel engine generator and a wind turbine generator. The FO-PID controllers are PID controller only, and the difference lies in the order of the integral and derivative part of the controllers. In FO controllers, the order of the integral and derivative part are fractional in nature. In this paper, particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm has been engaged to carry out the above mentioned LFC for the considered wind-biomass isolated hybrid power system. A comparison of FO control strategy with conventional based controller techniques is made. The FO-PID controller outperforms the conventional PID controllers. And, robustness analysis is also done for the FO-PID controller.

Solution of Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch by Symbiotic Organism Search Algorithm Incorporating FACTS Devices

Dharmbir Prasad; Vivekananda Mukherjee

ABSTRACT In the present work, symbiotic organism search (SOS) algorithm is applied for the solution of optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem of power system considering flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices. The proposed method is tested and examined on modified IEEE 30 bus test system with two types of FACTS devices namely thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC) and thyristor-controlled phase shifter (TCPS), placed at some strategic locations. In this study, ORPD problem has been formulated as single objective, constrained optimization problem that aims to reduce active power loss or total absolute voltage deviation individually. The formulation for conventional OPRD problem is evaluated by considering the settings of control parameters and maintaining the constraints of the FACTS devices as an additional entity. The effectiveness of the proposed method is analysed and compared to the results offered by some other optimization methods. The outcomes of the present work prove the potential of the SOS algorithm in solving ORPD problems of the power system incorporating FACTS devices.

Transient Stability Constrained Optimal Power Flow Using Chaotic Whale Optimization Algorithm

Dharmbir Prasad; Aparajita Mukherjee; Vivekananda Mukherjee

A novel and efficient evolutionary technique like whale optimization algorithm (WOA) embedded with chaos theory is proposed in this work to solve the transient stability constrained optimal power flow (OPF) (TSCOPF) problem of power system. TSCOPF problem is considered here as an extended OPF problem considering rotor angle deviation as an additional inequality constraint along with other equality and inequality constraints of the traditional OPF study. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified on Western Systems Coordinating Council 3-generator, 9-bus and IEEE 30-bus test power systems for the solution of TSCOPF problem. The objective function considered here is minimization of total fuel cost of the test system under study. The results offered by the proposed algorithm are compared to those offered by some other evolutionary optimization techniques surfaced in the recent state-of-the-art literature. Simulation test results indicate that the proposed algorithm yields superior solution over the other recently developed popular optimization techniques in terms of offering higher quality solutions, effectiveness and convergence speed.
