This paper aimed at describing the main methods used today in the detection of the differential functioning of items (DIF). We describe the methods of the Area between the ICCs, Comparison of the Probabilities, Comparison of the Items Parameters, Lords Chi-square, Scheunemans Chi-square, Pearsons or Total Chi-square, Mantel-Haenszel Method, Logistic Regression, Standardized Method and, finally, the Logistic Interactive Method. We present the mathematical basis, main advantages and limitations of these methods. Finally, we emphasize the presence of the DIF in psychological and educational tests as a problem for the assumption of standardized conditions and also as a cause of injustice and absence of equity for the assessment process.

Funcionamento Diferencial dos Itens (DIF): Estudo com Analogias para Medir o RaciocÌnio Verbal

This research aimed the determination of the differential item functioning (DIF) in 30 analogies used for the verbal reasoning assessment in students, taking into account the sex variable. A sample of 730 high school students, whose average age was 17,74 years (sd = 3,12 years) was used. The majority was composed by students from public schools (58,4%) and females (53,3%). The groups which participated in the study of DIF were composed by men (n= 342) and women (n= 388). The metric parameters of the items were determined according to the TRI model of two logistics parameters. For the determination of the DIF the method of comparation of the metric parameters of the items was used. The results indicated the presence of five items with DIF.

Avaliação do raciocínio abstrato em estudantes do ensino médio

This research aimed the evaluation of the cognitive capacity denominated Abstract Reasoning using students of the secondary level. It deals with our capacity to solve problems composed by abstract symbols. 513 students of the secondary level from public and private schools in the city of Fortaleza (CE, Northeast of Brazil) made up the sample, while the instrument used was the Abstract Reasoning Test developed by W. B. Andriola in 1996. By using analysis of variance (ANOVA) it was possible to compare the variables: sex, age, type of school and academic level to the performance on the Abstract Reasoning Test.

Representações sociais dos gestores e dos técnicos das unidades acadêmicas da Universidade Federal do Ceará(UFC) acerca da autoavaliação institucional

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi analisar a cultura avaliativa na Universidade Federal do Ceara (UFC), tendo como base as representacoes sociais dos gestores e dos tecnico-administrativos das nove unidades academicas dos campi de Fortaleza, que participaram do ciclo de Autoavaliacao Institucional 2005/2006. Utilizamos como sujeitos da pesquisa os nove gestores que integram as referidas unidades academicas e uma amostra de trinta e seis tecnico-administrativos, quatro em cada unidade. Pela especificidade deste estudo, de natureza exploratoria e descritiva, utilizamos o metodo indutivo, o que nos permitiu uma analise do particular para o geral, ou seja, a realizacao de inferencias sobre as representacoes especificas de cada sujeito para a realidade da UFC. Como instrumento mais adequado a pesquisa de campo, utilizamos o questionario previamente estruturado. Indagamos sobre o SINAES e a politica de avaliacao, bem como a participacao da comunidade interna no processo de Auto-Avaliacao Institucional da UFC. Ao analisar as representacoes de cada segmento, concluimos que elas tem um carater especifico, nao pelo fato de serem subjetivas, mas pela propria dinâmica social das condicoes nas quais se produzem e reproduzem. As representacoes dos gestores e tecnico-administrativos apresentam especificidades em relacao a insercao social e aos interesses inerentes de cada segmento.

Using innovative pedagogical practices in disciplines of engineering and computing graduation in Brazil

The use of innovative teaching practices has helped professors in universities, thus contributing to the improvement of undergraduate education. Within the engineering and computing areas of undergraduate courses, there is a more specific challenge to professors when ministering information technology management disciplines. This paper presents a study concerning the difficulties faced by IT management professors. We proceed with a review of innovative teaching practices used to improve the results of an IT governance discipline within a graduation course undertaken at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), Brazil. Results taken from an interview and an assessment of the professor by students in the discipline were proven to be quite promising.

Avaliação do aprendizado discente: estudo com professores de Escolas Públicas

O texto relata os resultados de um estudo efetivado com 40 professores do Sistema Educacional do Estado do Ceara, no qual foram sondados acerca das potencialidades e dificuldades inerentes a avaliacao do aprendizado dos alunos. Os resultados da pesquisa sugerem que os professores: a) usam o dialogo com os alunos e os recursos audiovisuais como duas estrategias para motiva-los para o aprendizado; b) compreendem a aprendizagem como processo cognitivo de internalizar e aplicar os conhecimentos adquiridos ; c) creem que sao totalmente responsaveis pelo progresso dos discentes ; d) dao enfase a participacao dos alunos nas atividades de sala de aula, ao desempenho destes em provas escritas, em pesquisas escolares e em trabalhos em grupo. Alegam, no entanto, que os principais empecilhos ao aprendizado sao a falta de interesse dos alunos, a indisciplina em sala de aula, bem como o distanciamento da familia da escola. De posse dos resultados das avaliacoes da aprendizagem, os professores geralmente revisam os conteudos nos quais houve baixo nivel de rendimento dos discentes, bem como tendem a refletir acerca dos erros mais cometidos pelos discentes. Com base nessas informacoes alguns professores alegam modificar as estrategias de ensino, bem como usar estrategias pedagogicas mais variadas.

A mixed pedagogical method to improve teaching and learning in Brazilian computing area undergraduate courses

In this paper, we present an innovative mixed pedagogical method to improve teaching and learning in undergraduate courses related to computer area. The method proposes learning multi-criteria assessments and pedagogical strategies, such as problem-based learning, that should be carried out during the activities. This research was performed in a three-year case study in courses undertaken at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), Brazil. The main contribution of this work is the mixed pedagogical method that uses the combination of important pedagogical strategies, with promising results. There was observed an improvement in student results and professor evaluations in four of the five cases. In these four courses, researchers used the method with all requirements being met.

Avaliação dos impactos sociais oriundos da interiorização da Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC)

Relata os principais resultados de estudo avaliativo sobre os impactos da presenca da Universidade Federal do Ceara (UFC) em municipios do interior do estado, apos a adesao desta ao Programa de Apoio a Planos de Reestruturacao e Expansao das Universidades Federais (Reuni). Para tal, realizou-se pesquisa descritiva (ex-post facto) com 129 docentes e 503 discentes dos tres campi avancados da UFC, nos municipios de Sobral, de Quixada e da Regiao do Cariri (Juazeiro do Norte, Crato e Barbalha), e com 191 moradores locais. Os questionarios destinados aos docentes e aos discentes foram autoaplicados, isto e, distribuidos aos respondentes para que estes os preenchessem de modo individual e, posteriormente, devolvidos aos auxiliares de pesquisa. Com os moradores locais, empregou-se roteiro semiestruturado de entrevista, aplicado de modo individualizado. Os resultados obtidos com as audiencias estudadas (alunos, docentes e moradores locais) nos tres campi convergiram para a aceitacao de que a UFC causou impactos sociais positivos nos municipios cearenses do interior, dentre os quais: maior dinamizacao economica local, implicando crescimento municipal; maior oportunidade de a populacao local contar com novas formas de qualificacao profissional por meio do acesso a UFC; geracao de mais postos de trabalho para os moradores locais.

Developing an Instrument for Assessment of Academic Management in Engineering Courses

Higher education in Brazil been expanding in recent years, although, one of the major problems encountered have been the evasion and failure rates in general courses and specifically in engineering undergraduate courses. In this context, educational evaluation, with the goal of diagnosing needs for improvement, can contribute to the quality of higher education, regarding some aspects such as teaching methodology, human interrelationships in the teaching profession and academic management, among others. This study is based on the analysis of the development and subsequent implementation of an assessment tool that would enable the analysis of academic and administrative expertise of academic management. The instrument consists of a list of 15 statements related to aspects of higher education management, where the target audience of the research are the teachers of 6 engineering courses at Federal University of Ceara (UFC), indicating their degree of agreement with the statements. For the analysis, a multivariate statistical tool called Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used. The results show the feasibility of PCA to analyze aspects of academic management, by explaining relevant information extracted from the latent variables of the data, which allowed us to identify a group of clusters related to management of higher education in engineering within the UFC. The study points to the use of this information in the future related to the contents of external assessments through more robust and detailed mathematical analysis tools.
