Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy: current status

The role of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is reviewed by authors from the Cleveland clinic. They discuss not only its history and development but also its current status in the management of prostate cancer. Bladder cancer is reviewed comprehensively by authors from Miami and Iowa; not only TCC but also the rather uncommon small cell neoplasm.

et al. ; they describe correctly that placebocontrolled studies with tamsulosin showed a higher incidence of abnormal ejaculation than those with other a 1 -adrenoceptor antagonists such as alfuzosin [8]. However, they fail to mention the only two randomized, double-blind, and direct comparative studies with alfuzosin and tamsulosin. In an initial study comparing the immediate-release formulation of alfuzosin with tamsulosin, sponsored by the manufacturer of tamsulosin, both drugs caused similarly low rates of abnormal ejaculation, which were not statistically significant [9]. More recently there was a direct comparison between the once-daily formulation of alfuzosin and tamsulosin, sponsored by the manufacturer of alfuzosin. Unfortunately, that study was never published in a scientific journal but the results can be accessed as part of the registration information of alfuzosin in the USA, at http://www.fda.gov/cder/approval/ index.htm (Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, USA Food and Drug Administration). Similar to the previous study, incidences of abnormal ejaculation were low with both treatments and there were no statistically significant differences between them.
