Evaluation of respiratory reserve is an important step in preparing patients for pulmonary surgery. This can be estimated clinically to a degree, but the validity of the estimation often is improved by studies of pulmonary function. In addition to aiding in the selection of patients for surgery, such data may provide a base line for respiratory therapists to use during the postoperative period. When pulmonary resection is anticipated, selective determination of function of separate portions of the lungs is often desirable.
