Multichannel magnetoencephalography for localization of epileptogenic activity in intractable epilepsies

Evert Knutsson; Eric Hellstrand; Siegfried Schneider; Werner Striebel

The authors studied patients with medically intractable epilepsy using interictal multichannel magnetoencephalography (MEG), and intracranial electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings of their seizures. It was found that strong interictal, epileptogenic, biomagnetic signals originated in small areas within the much larger areas that include the site where epileptic seizures, according to intracranial EEG recordings, appear to start. Thus, the interictal biomagnetic signals may imply a more precise localization of epileptic activity acting as a pacemaker for seizures. >
