Traffic Considerations for Security Services in VoIP Systems

Voice over IP systems require a new infrastructure of security services. The demand is currently growing and deploys basic-authentication in the first step. Scalable implementations however further evolution of this technologies. This new authentication services using signed certificates and crypto-promise to solve current scalability and management issues. Additionally, if carefully implemented, they can serve for other applications besides VoIP as well. Certificate-authorities, directories and others backend services build the trust environment that delivers the required credentials to network elements, servers and user equipment. All this new backend-services generate a new category of IP traffic.

Regulatory challenges for the transition of public telephony to the Internet

Fixed and mobile telephony with other telecommunication services are moving to a fundamentally different infrastructure as the transition proceeds from the public telephone network to the Internet. There are many opportunities to make significant progress on major developments such as separation of operator independent functions, modular design, and the integration of other desirable features of sustainable Internet solutions. This progress also means that the impacts of some shortcomings of currently competitive telephony services will decline—another benefit of the transition.However, because telephony services are essentially being “emulated” over the Internet infrastructure, other aspects of these services will be changed in ways that could affect the public good. In particular, trust-related issues such as authentication and validation, along with their business implications, present significant challenges. This paper explores these issues, including the opportunity that industry and the regulators now have to address them, and suggests approaches to sustainable solutions that can benefit all the stakeholders in this transition.ZusammenfassungFestnetz, Mobilfunk und andere Telekommunikationsdienste verlagern sich ins Internet. Dabei ergeben sich aus der grundlegend unterschiedlichen Infrastruktur des Internet auch viele Chancen, diese Dienste neu zu gestalten und nachhaltige Lösungen anzubieten. Diese Verlagerung erlaubt auch eine Evolution hin zu separierten betreiberunabhängigen Funktionen, modularem Design und Integration vorhandener Internetdienste. In diesem Zusammenhang kann man auch einige Schwächen der heute konkurrenzfähigen Telefoniedienste mit dem Fortschritt der Technologie korrigieren.Weil heutige Ansätze für Internettelefonie in der Regel öffentliche Telefonsysteme im Internet „emulieren“, entstehen Lösungen, die dem Wohl der Allgemeinheit nicht immer zuträglich sind. Speziell vertrauensbezogene Themen wie Authentifizierung und Validierung mit ihren geschäftlichen Einflüssen müssen als signifikante Herausforderung gesehen werden. Dieser Beitrag untersucht diese Migration und Chancen, welche die Industrie und Regulatoren aufgreifen können, um nachhaltige Lösungen zum Vorteil aller Beteiligten zu entwickeln.

Einsatz netzwerkunabhängiger Dienste

Kommunikationsdienste im Internet erfordern eine neue Verteilung der Rollen der Beteiligten und damit angepasste und neue Geschäftsstrategien der Betreiber und Kunden. So können Telefondienste von netzwerkunabhängigen Dienstebetreibern oder von den Endgeräten beim Kunden bereitgestellt werden. Die Ursachen dieser Neuverteilung sind sowohl technisch als auch wirtschaftlich begründet, und sie sind eng mit der ab 1996 angestoßenen Deregulierung der Telekommunikationsmärkte und der zunehmenden Mobilität von Kunden und Dienstbetreiber verbunden. Dieser Beitrag diskutiert Gründe und mögliche Ansätze für die von vielen Begehrlichkeiten begleitete Migration zu netzwerkunabhängigen Diensten.The migration of communication services to the Internet has severe consequences in the re-definition of the roles of all stakeholders. Thus, new business strategies need to take place for operators and their customers. Amongst others, new services will be deployed by independent service-operators and even by end-users on their customer premises equipment. There are technical as well as business reasons which are tied to the deregulation of telecom markets that started back in 1996. Additional reasons are in the mobility of customers as well as service-providers. This paper discusses the reasons and possibly some cure to overcome at least some of the greed we see on the path towards network independent services.
