Vehicle integration of a new engine concept for 48 Volts – opportunities for efficiency improvement and optimization of the overall system complexity

To achieve fleet fuel consumption legislation of 95g/km CO2 in 2020, various electrification measures will be introduced, besides engine measures, to reduce the overall energy demand of the vehicle. 48V architecture represents an attractive compromise between the standard 12V system and high voltage hybrid systems. The 48V system offers on the one hand already attractive performance potential for moderate hybridization steps, on the other hand, opportunities open up for the electrification of the internal combustion engine (ICE) and its auxiliaries as well as other vehicle components with high power demand. Current belt starter-generator systems already realise direct recuperation and torque boost functions. Additionally they can support a highly effective electrical supercharging system which is clearly superior to current multi-stage turbocharging concepts, particularly in transient response. With flywheel startergenerator concepts, additional functions open up such as purely electric driving in a limited range, or simplification of the base engine towards the goal of a beltless engine. Demand controlled, electrical auxiliaries are already in series production for the cooling-, vacuum- or air conditioning systems. Additional areas of interest are the oil system and variable elements in the valve train or crank train.

Highly loaded cylinder heads in diesel and gasoline engines

Helfried Sorger; Franz Zieher; Ulrich Sauerwein; Wolfgang Schöffmann

Increasingly stringent emission regulations and higher demands with regard to performance and fuel consumption accelerate the introduction of new technologies and development procedures for today’s diesel and gasoline engines. The resulting increased thermo-mechanical loads on the basic engine, in particular the cylinder head and the exhaust gas system, are especially challenging. This paper discusses future solutions from AVL for highly loaded cylinder heads within the context of the conflict „technology versus costs“.

To achieve fleet fuel consumption legislation of 95g/km CO2 in 2020, various electrification measures will be introduced, besides engine measures, to reduce the overall energy demand of the vehicle. The introduction of 48V electrical architecture provides increased electric recuperation and limited electric driving at lower cost compared to full hybrid solutions, offering considerable fuel reduction potential in the WLTC.

The next steps of fuel consumption legislation will require a combination of engine measures with various electrification measures, dependent on the vehicle segment, to reduce the energy demand targets of the vehicle. The introduction of 48V electrical architecture provides increased electric recuperation and limited electric driving at lower cost compared to full hybrid solutions, offering considerable fuel reduction potential in the WLTC.

Hochbelastete Zylinderköpfe für Otto- und Dieselmotoren

Helfried Sorger; Franz Zieher; Ulrich Sauerwein; Wolfgang Schöffmann

New design methodology for reducing development time

Helfried Sorger; Wolfgang Schöffmann; Ralf Marquard

Despite increasing cost pressure, car manufacturers have to cope with shorter model cycles. Against this background, AVL developed a design methodology that optimises development processes while improving the engineers’ possibilities to bring in their creativity and concentrate on their key responsibilities.
