LiSr(2)(NCN)I(3), the first extended compound containing empty tetrahedral Sr(4) entities, is synthesized using a new flux route, and it exhibits two interpenetrating three-dimensional networks made up from Sr tetrahedra capped by NCN(2-) anions on their triangular faces and vertex-sharing LiI(6) octahedra.

Yellow single crystals of Eu4OI6 were grown from fluxes in Ta ampoules and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. Eu4OI6 crystallizes in a hexagonal system and is isotypic with the corresponding chloride and bromide compounds. The O atom and one Eu atom lie on sites with 3m symmetry; the other Eu atom and the two unique I atoms are at sites with m symmetry. The structure is characterized by O-centered tetrahedra of divalent europium cations [Eu-O = 2.391 (15) and 2.416 (5) A, and mean Eu-Eu = 3.94 A] and hexagonal channels along [001] filled with iodide anions.

Colourless single crystals of Na3YCl6, crystallizing in the cryolite structure type and isotypic with Na3GdCl6-II and Na3MCl6 (M = Sc, Dy–Lu), were prepared from a flux of YCl3, NaCN and NaN3; the trivalent yttrium is octahedrally coordinated by chlorine atoms with an average Y—Cl distance of 2.62 A. The Y atom and one Na atom lie on centres of symmetry.

Eu8(NCN)4.95I6.10 is the first compound with discrete tritetrahedral Eu8 clusters which are interconnected by coordinating NCN2- carbodiimide anions on their triangular faces to form separated layers, the latter being bridged by iodide and carbodiimide anions.

Pink single crystals of EuBrI were grown from fluxes in Ta ampoules at 973 K and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. EuBrI crystallizes in the orthorhombic system with nine-coordinate divalent europium and adopts the ordered PbCl2 structure type.
