Modal wavefront reconstruction based on Zernike polynomials for lateral shearing interferometry: comparisons of existing algorithms

Fengzhao Dai; Feng Tang; Xiangzhao Wang; Osami Sasaki; Peng Feng

Four modal methods of reconstructing a wavefront from its difference fronts based on Zernike polynomials in lateral shearing interferometry are currently available, namely the Rimmer-Wyant method, elliptical orthogonal transformation, numerical orthogonal transformation, and difference Zernike polynomial fitting. The present study compared these four methods by theoretical analysis and numerical experiments. The results show that the difference Zernike polynomial fitting method is superior to the three other methods due to its high accuracy, easy implementation, easy extension to any high order, and applicability to the reconstruction of a wavefront on an aperture of arbitrary shape. Thus, this method is recommended for use in lateral shearing interferometry for wavefront reconstruction.

Use of numerical orthogonal transformation for the Zernike analysis of lateral shearing interferograms

Fengzhao Dai; Feng Tang; Xiangzhao Wang; Peng Feng; Osami Sasaki

A numerical orthogonal transformation method for reconstructing a wavefront by use of Zernike polynomials in lateral shearing interferometry is proposed. The difference fronts data in two perpendicular directions are fitted to numerical orthonormal polynomials instead of Zernike polynomials, and then the orthonormal coefficients are used to evaluate the Zernike coefficients of the original wavefront by use of a numerical shear matrix. Due to the fact that the dimensions of the shear matrix are finite, the high-order terms of the original wavefront above a certain order have to be neglected. One of advantages of the proposed method is that the impact of the neglected high-order terms on the outcomes of the lower-order terms can be decreased, which leads to a more accurate reconstruction result. Another advantage is that the proposed method can be applied to reconstruct a wavefront on an aperture of arbitrary shape from its difference fronts. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations shows that the proposed method is correct and its reconstruction error is obviously smaller than that of Rimmer-Wyant method.

Distributed measurement of birefringence dispersion in polarization-maintaining fibers

Feng Tang; Xiangzhao Wang; Yimo Zhang; Wencai Jing

A new method to measure the birefringence dispersion in high-birefringence polarization-maintaining fibers is presented using white-light interferometry. By analyzing broadening of low-coherence interferograms obtained in a scanning Michelson interferometer, the birefringence dispersion and its variation along different fiber sections are acquired with high sensitivity and accuracy. Birefringence dispersions of two PANDA fibers at their operation wavelength are measured to be 0.011 ps/(km nm) and 0.018 ps/(km nm), respectively. Distributed measurement capability of the method is also verified experimentally.

Characterization of birefringence dispersion in polarization-maintaining fibers by use of white-light interferometry

Feng Tang; Xiangzhao Wang; Yimo Zhang; Wencai Jing

A new method for measuring the birefringence dispersion in polarization-maintaining fibers (PMFs) with high sensitivity and accuracy is presented. The method employs white-light interferences between two orthogonally polarized modes of PMFs. The group birefringence of the fiber is calibrated first. Then the birefringence dispersion and its variation along different fiber sections are acquired by analyzing the broadening of interferograms at different fiber lengths. The main sources of error are investigated. Birefringence dispersions of two PANDA fibers at their operation wavelength are measured to be 0.011 ps/(km nm) and 0.018 ps/(km nm). A measurement repeatability of 0.001 ps/(km nm) is achieved.

A simple optical reader was developed for rapid and sensitive quantification of lateral flow (LF) strip with upconverting phosphor (UCP) particles as reporters. The excitation beam from a 980 nm laser diode (LD) was focused to a 4 mm (length) times 0.02 mm (width) rectangular spot on LF strip. A rectangular slit with 4 mm times 0.02 mm before the photomultiplier tube (PMT) which was selected as receiver was introduced as field diaphragm to prevent stray light from entering the PMT. The scanning resolution was 20 mum, and the scanning speed was 0.75 mm/s, and the scanning range was 10 mm. With the above optical reader, serial dilutions of Yersinia pestis F1 antigen were detected to achieve the test sensitivity was 5 ng/ml, and the dynamic range reached 150 ng/ml. The algorithms of the low-pass filter and the first derivative were used to search the boundaries of T line and C line from the original data acquired by the reader. A four-parameter logistic mathematical model was used to deduce the quantitative equation for determination of unknown F1 antigen concentration. Our 1-D optical reader possessed the following characteristics: high 1-D testing resolution, high sensitivity, simple structure, simple data processing method, high testing efficiency, and small total volume.

Effects of coherence on anisotropic electromagnetic Gaussian-Schell model beams on propagation

Hua Wang; Xiangzhao Wang; Aijun Zeng; Kun Yang

An analytical formula for the cross-spectral density matrix of the electric field of anisotropic electromagnetic Gaussian-Schell model beams propagating in free space is derived by using a tensor method. The effects of coherence on those beams are studied. It is shown that two anisotropic stochastic electromagnetic beams that propagate from the source plane z=0 into the half-space z>0 may have different beam shapes (i.e., spectral density) and states of polarization in the half-space, even though they have the same beam shape and states of polarization in the source plane. This fact is due to a difference in the coherence properties of the field in the source plane.

Generalized zonal wavefront reconstruction for high spatial resolution in lateral shearing interferometry

Fengzhao Dai; Feng Tang; Xiangzhao Wang; Osami Sasaki

A new zonal wavefront reconstruction method for lateral shearing interferometry was presented. The proposed algorithm allows shear amounts equal to arbitrary integral multiple of the sample intervals. High spatial resolution reconstruction is achieved with only two difference wavefronts measured in orthogonal shear directions. The presented algorithm was generalized to be applicable for general aperture shape by using zero padding and Gerchberg-type iterative methods. The capability of the presented algorithm was demonstrated by some numerical examples. Also, the reconstruction error was analyzed theoretically and numerically.

Aberration measurement of projection optics in lithographic tools based on two-beam interference theory

Mingying Ma; Xiangzhao Wang; Fan Wang

The degradation of image quality caused by aberrations of projection optics in lithographic tools is a serious problem in optical lithography. We propose what we believe to be a novel technique for measuring aberrations of projection optics based on two-beam interference theory. By utilizing the partial coherent imaging theory, a novel model that accurately characterizes the relative image displacement of a fine grating pattern to a large pattern induced by aberrations is derived. Both even and odd aberrations are extracted independently from the relative image displacements of the printed patterns by two-beam interference imaging of the zeroth and positive first orders. The simulation results show that by using this technique we can measure the aberrations present in the lithographic tool with higher accuracy.

Phase unwrapping based on branch cut placing and reliability ordering

Yuangang Lu; Xiangzhao Wang; Guotian He

A new 2-D quality-guided phase-unwrapping algorithm, based on the placement of the branch cuts, is presented. Its framework consists of branch cut placing guided by an original quality map and reliability ordering performed on a final quality map. To improve the noise immunity of the new algorithm, a new quality map, which is used as the original quality map to guide the placement of the branch cuts, is proposed. After a complete description of the algorithm and the quality map, several wrapped images are used to examine the effectiveness of the algorithm. Computer simulation and experimental results make it clear that the proposed algorithm works effectively even when a wrapped phase map contains error sources, such as phase discontinuities, noise, and undersampling. Full-range parallel Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography using sinusoidal phase-modulating interferometry

Peng Bu; Xiangzhao Wang; Osami Sasaki

We demonstrate a full-range parallel Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT) in which a tomogram free of mirror images as well as DC and autocorrelation terms is obtained in parallel. The phase and amplitude of two-dimensional spectral interferograms are accurately detected by using sinusoidal phase-modulating interferometry and a two-dimensional CCD camera, which allows for the reconstruction of two-dimensional complex spectral interferograms. By line-by-line inverse Fourier transformation of the two-dimensional complex spectral interferogram, a full-range parallel FD-OCT is realized. Tomographic images of two separated glass coverslips obtained with our method are presented as a proof-of-principle experiment.
