Three new supramolecular architectures based on polyoxovanadates H6V10O28·2HMTA·8H2O(1), [Ni(enMe)3]2(VIV8VV7O36Cl)·2H3O (2) and [Co(en)3]2(VIV8VV7O36Cl)·2H3O (3) (HMTA = hexamethylenetetramine, enMe = 1,2′-propanediamine and en = ethylenediamine) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectra, XPS spectra and single crystal X-ray diffraction structure analyses. Compound 1 displays a 3-D (4,8)-connected supramolecular host network, which is constructed of octamer water clusters and HMTA molecules, with 1-D channels occupied by the template [H6V10O28] units. Compound 2 possesses a 2-D (3,6)-connected supramolecular layered structure formed by water molecules and [V15O36]3− units showing honeycomb cavities occupied by the transition metal complexes (TMCs). Compound 3 exhibits a 3-D (4,6)-connected supramolecular host network built by the [V15O36]3− units and the lattice water molecules with TMCs cations as the template. By a careful inspection of the structures of 1–3, it is believed that the steric hindrances of organonitrogen ligands are important for the formation of different supramolecular networks. Compound 1 exhibits intensive photoluminescence and compound 3 displays antiferromagnetic interactions.

Two new coordination polymers based on 4-[(8-hydroxy-5-quinolinyl)azo]-benzenesulfonic acid(H2L), {[CdL(H2O)2]·H2O}n(1) and {[CdL(en)]·EtOH}n(2)(en=ethylenediamine), were solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit infinite 1D ladder-shaped chain structures, which are isostructural except that the two coordinating water molecules in compound 1 were replaced by one en molecule in compound 2 due to the use of different organic base. Compounds 1 and 2 were constructed into different supramolecular frameworks by hydrogen bonding and π…π stacking interactions. In addition, the fluorescent properties of compounds 1 and 2 were investigated. Furthermore, they were also investigated via IR spectral analysis, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction(PXRD) and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).

A novel paradodecatungstate compound, namely [Na2(H2O)10][Cu4(H2O)12(H2W12O42)]·15H2O (1) has been synthesized by convenient aqueous solution method and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectra, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential thermal analysis. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that in compound 1, the [H2W12O42]10− anions are connected via divalent copper cation as purely inorganic linker to form a three-dimensional structural network. In addition, compound 1 exhibits strong photoluminescent emission at room temperature.

One new coordination polymer based on 4-[(8-hydroxy-5-quinolinyl)azo]-benzoic acid(H2L), {[CdL(H2O)]·H2O}n (1) was solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared spectrometry, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction(PXRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In compound 1, L2− ligands link Cd(II) to form a sinusoidal ruffling layer, in which the carboxylic groups connect Cd(II) into an infinite Cd—O chain. And the layers are further stabilized by hydrogen bonding and π…π interactions, forming a three-dimensional(3D) supramolecular network. In addition, the fluorescent property of compound 1 was also investigated.

One new supramolecular compound based on H2L (H2L = 4-[(8-hydroxy-5-quinolinyl)azo]-benzenesulfonic acid, C15H11O4N3S), [Zn3L2(OH)2(H2O)6]n (1), has been synthesized by hydrothermal technique. Compound 1 exhibits a one-dimensional (1-D) double-chain structure. Compound 1 is the first example of an azo complex used to co-sensitize TiO2 photoanode with Ru dyes (N719, N3). In the tandem structure of compound 1/N719/TiO2, compound 1 plays a significant role in the improvement of the photoelectric conversion efficiency, which works with N719 to modify the energy level. The results show that the compound 1/N719/TiO2 solar cell exhibited excellent photovoltaic performance with the photoelectric conversion efficiency of 7.1% under standard global AM 1.5 solar irradiation conditions.
