A 9.8 W, continuous wave (CW) operation of a a-cut Tm,Ho:YAlO3 (Tm,Ho:YAP) laser at 2119.2 nm is reported in this paper. The Tm,Ho:YAP crystal, which was cooled at the temperature of 77 K, was double end-pumped by two 14.0- W fiber-coupled laser diodes at 793.5 nm. An optical-optical conversion efficiency of 35% was acquired, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 37.8%.

We report a tunable mid-infrared optical parametric oscillator (OPO) using a single ZnGeP2 (ZGP) crystal with the cut-angle of 51.4°. A 17.0-W Q-switch Tm,Ho:GdVO4 laser is pumped by 800-nm LDs to generate 2.05-µm radiation, which have been used for pumping a angle-tuned ZGP OPO to generate mid-IR tunable from 5.84 to 7.87 µm. A 1.90-W idler output power has been acquired at 7.06 µm with 17.0-W pump power, corresponding to the idler laser slope efficiency of 13.4 %.

An intensity-demodulated AC current sensor system, which compensated the background temperature, was proposed and demonstrated. Temperature-compensated current detection is achieved by designing a novel sensor head which makes a pair of flat-topped FBGs (FT-FBGs) having differential current responses and the same temperature responses. As a result, optical intensity after the two tandem FT-FBGs varies monotonously with measured current and has no relation to the background temperature. The experimental results shows that the minimum ac current of 2.4 A is detected by the sensor and a linear relationship in the range of 0–426.0 A is obtained.

A 20.1 W, continuous wave (CW) operation of a b-cut Tm, Ho:YAlO3 (Tm,Ho:YAP) laser at 2.12 µm is reported in this paper. The Tm,Ho:YAP crystal, which was cooled by liquid nitrogen at 77 K, was double end-pumped by two 22.5-W fiber-coupled laser diodes at 794.3 nm. An optical-optical conversion efficiency of 44.7% was achieved, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 46.1%.
