Kwang-Soon Choi; Yang-Keun Ahn; Young-Choong Park; Woo-Chool Park; Hae-Moon Seo; Kwang-Mo Jung; Kyeung-Hak Seo

Recently, a global market related to energy efficiency and energy saving technologies is being extended rapidly with the growth of a matter of primary concern about extreme climate change. Especially, in the home network environments where only its functional aspects have been focused on without considering energy consumption, it is urgent to develop new energy-efficient technologies specialized in the home network environments. In this paper, architecture of home energy saving system (HESS) based on energy-awareness and its basic functional requirements are designed and proposed for real-time home energy monitoring service, reducing or cutting off standby power caused by home appliances, and intelligent home energy management service.

A Tangible Floating Display System for Interaction

Young-Min Kim; Hoonjong Kang; Yang-Keun Ahn; Kwang-Soon Choi; Byoung-Ha Park; Sunghee Hong; Kwang-Mo Jung

A tangible floating display that can provide different perspective views without special glasses being introduced. The proposed system can display perspective floating images in the space in front of the system with the help of concave mirrors. In order to avoid wearing special equipment to interact and deliver the sense of touch, the proposed system adopted an ultrasound focusing technology. For providing an immersive experience to the viewers, the proposed system consists of a tangible floating display system and a multiple-view imaging system for generating three lenticular displays in front of the users.

Compensation of elemental image using multiple view vectors for off-axis integral floating system

Young Min Kim; Junkyu Yim; Yang-Keun Ahn; Sung-Wook Min

A novel method is proposed to compensate the distortion caused by the off-axis structure in integral floating with a concave mirror. The proposed method of this paper can generate the elemental image that is integrated into the multiple predistortion images for the corresponding multiview directions, which cannot be performed by the predistortion method using a single-view vector. The fundamental concept of the proposed method is that the predistortion images can be generated for more than two view vectors, which are defined by each set of corresponding elemental lens and subimage, and captured onto the subimage. In addition, the subimage can be divided into the several segments to increase the number of view vectors, so that the predistortion images generated by more view vectors can enhance the degree of compensation. The proper number of the view vectors per subimage is discussed and analyzed based on the small-angle approximation. Experiments to verify the feasibility of the proposed method are performed.

Application of DIBR algorithm in real-time image

Yang-Keun Ahn; Jiman Hong

Depth image based rendering (DIBR) creates left-view and right-view images using a single image and its depth information, thereby requiring a reduced amount of the bandwidth. However, few studies have dealt with the problems and performance capabilities of such algorithms when they are applied to real-time images. In this paper, we propose an alternative approach to create 3D TV stereo images by applying various DIBR algorithms to real-time images.

Kwang-Soon Choi; Young-Choong Park; Yang-Keun Ahn; Kwang-Mo Jung; Sukil Hong; Ha-Bong Chung

Energy Saving System (ESS) is designed and implemented for real-time home energy measurement and the efficient power control at homes or buildings. For energy saving functions and the future extension to the Smart Grid, architectural and functional requirements of ESS server and ESS client are defined. In addition, prototypes of ESS components such as ESS server, ESS client and portable ESS terminal are implemented for the practical usage.

Nonlinear Optimization Method for Multiple Image Registration

Yang-Keun Ahn; Jiman Hong

In this paper, we propose nonlinear optimization method for feature matching from multiple view image. Typical solution of feature matching is by solving linear equation. However this solution has large error due to nonlinearity of image formation model. If typical nonlinear optimization method is used, complexity grows exponentially over the number of features. To make complexity lower, we use sparse Levenberg-Marquardt nonlinear optimization for matching of features over multiple view image.

A Three-Dimensional Fingertip Interface

Yang-Keun Ahn; Kwang-Mo Jung; Jiman Hong

This paper proposes a method to recognize the fingertip three-dimensionally using infrared stereo cameras. The proposed method can be used for human-computer interactions with a three-dimensional display and is designed to provide robust performance against finger trembling, kinematic errors, and sensor noise. This paper describes the proposed method in detail and also presents implementation results.

Depth image improvement for 3D applications

Yang-Keun Ahn; Jiman Hong

This paper uses the area-based canny edge detector to keep the boundaries intact while applying the boundary-based depth image improvement technique to the flat areas. The proposed method will provide a better sense of depth by addressing image quality deterioration, which may take place in acquiring depth images in a limited environment, through post-or pre-treatment. We expect such improvement in depth images to be applied to various 3D applications, such as depth-based 3D body gesture recognition/interaction, depth-based image rendering (DBIR), 3D TV.

TOF Camera based 3D Fingertip Location Estimation

Yang-Keun Ahn; Min-Wook Kim; Kwang-Mo Jung; Taehyoung Kim; Jaehoon Ahn; Sukil Hong

Human computer interaction (HCI) plays a important role in many applications today. It exists the desire to realize more natural forms of interaction between humans and machines. One of these forms is the interaction via gestures, e.g. by recognizing natural hand- or full-body movements. Many researchers have focused on measuring the articulation of the whole body neglecting the hand posture since full-body posture is in itself already a complex task, even when problems due to clothing, self-occlusion and non-rigid tissue can be avoided.

3D Fingertip Estimation based on the TOF Camera for Virtual Touch Screen System

Min-Wook Kim; Yang-Keun Ahn; Kwang-Mo Jung; Chil-Woo Lee

ABSTRACT TOF technique is one of the skills that can obtain the objects 3D depth information. But depth image has low resolution and fingertip occupy very small region, so, it is difficult to find the precise fingertips 3D information by only using depth image from TOF camera. In this paper, we estimate fingertips 3D location using Arm Model and reliable hands 3D location information that is modified by hexahedron as hand model. Using proposed method we can obtain more precise fingertips 3D information than using only depth image. Keywords:Virtual Touch Screen, TOF, Fingertip Tracking, Hand Modeling, Image Processing 1.
