Abstract An LB film of poly( p -phenylenevinylene) (PPV) was successfully prepared by heat treatment of the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film of an amphiphilic poly( p -xylylene sulfonium salt). The electrical conductivities of the SO 3 -doped PPV LB film were 0.5 and 1 × 10 −5 S cm −1 in the lateral and normal directions, respectively. The PPV LB film was electrochemically doped and dedoped at E = +0.56 V and E = +0.16 V vs. Ag/AgCl, respectively.

Ferroelectric liquid crystal cells with a high degree of bistability were prepared using the polyimide LB film as the aligning layer. The plots of the threshold voltages (Vth) and the pulse widths ( Δt), which were necessary to switch between the bistable states under the application of bipolar pulse voltages, displayed a hyperbola which was asymptotic to Δt=0 and Vth=constant (≠0).

Abstract The tilting angle of the long alkyl chain of Langmuir-Blodgett films (LB films) of polyamic acid alkylamine salts was measured using FT-IR specroscopy to investigate the structure of the long alkyl chain in the expanded LB films. The obtained tilting angle and the thickness of the monolayer suggested that the alkyl chains were at an angle with some distribution.

Thermally stable multilayer films of polyimide containing photosensitive disilane unit were applied to KrF excimer laser resists. The multilayer films prepared by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique were found to act as positive working resists with a resolution of 0.25 µm lines and spaces.

Using a solution of polyamic acid salt obtained in combination with polyamic acid and N-icocylpyrrolidine, we successfully prepared thermally stable multilayer films of disilane-containing polyimide by Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The films were found to act as positive-working deep UV resists.
