Thermally stable multilayer films of polyimide containing photosensitive disilane unit were applied to KrF excimer laser resists. The multilayer films prepared by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique were found to act as positive working resists with a resolution of 0.25 µm lines and spaces.

— A 1M-pixel full-color projection display with a very simple optical system using a conventional overhead projector has been developed. This display uses the nematic-cholesteric phase-transition liquid-crystal display and a micro-color-filter. Moreover, the micro-color-filter can be placed outside the liquid-crystal panel. This simple configuration provides a high-performance low-cost color electronic overhead projector. This projection display uses a 9M-pixel nematic-cholesteric phase-transition black-and-white liquid-crystal panel to enable gray shades by spatial dither, resulting in a full-color projection display. A 12:1 contrast ratio and 2.2-ms line-addressing time is achieved.

Using a solution of polyamic acid salt obtained in combination with polyamic acid and N-icocylpyrrolidine, we successfully prepared thermally stable multilayer films of disilane-containing polyimide by Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The films were found to act as positive-working deep UV resists.

We investigated the effect of a storage capacitor (Cs) on the driving voltage in ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) displays by which a TFT array drives the FLCs. The addition of Cs enabled a decrease in the driving voltage. When spontaneous polarization (Ps) was large, the decrease in the driving voltage was larger than when Ps was small. We were able to use 5V as the driving voltage of an FLC display. According to the prototype we built based on the field sequential color (FSC) method, we were able to achieve the characteristics of super-high-resolution (318 ppi), high-speed response (300 μs), and high color purity (greater than the NTSC standard).

A PDP with SrO protective layer showed a grave deterioration of static voltage margin due to a conductivity of the protective layer. The conductivity of SrO in a realistic panel was analyzed by using an LCR meter. An activation energy related to the conductivity was 0.49 eV.

We investigated the feasibility of employing a full-plating processes for the metal electrodes in PDPs. Using deposition with a full-plating process, we succeeded in fabricating copper electrodes with a thicknesses of over 10 μm. Moreover, we fabricated and operated panels with fully plated bus electrodes. These plating processes seem to hold promise in the simultaneous pursuit of metal electrodes with the highest conductance and lower costs.
