The aim of this article is to propose an action approach to organizational learning. The role of cultural and social context in organizational learning is discussed. It is supported a critical view toward Peter Senges proposition at The Fifth Discipline as a way to inspire effective organizational learning actions. The notion of organizational learning opportunities is proposed as an alternative way to reach organizational learning actions. This notion is based on different features of organizational learning processes and on action-research developed at this field. Examples of organizational learning opportunities at specific social and cultural contexts are presented: work meetings and trade fairs.

This study analyzes the internationalization process of medium sized companies of the leather-footwear supply chain, located in the Sinos Valley, in the southern region of Brazil. The two cases of footwear component companies were identifi ed by entrepreneurs from the leatherfootwear supply chain as the most outstanding from the Sinos Valley in internationalization practices. Thus, this study aims to identify which resources those companies mobilize to develop their internationalization process. The organizational competence concept provides the theoretical base for the data interpretation. The results show that the internationalization of those companies is related to a combination of resources associated to three competences: (a) process technology domain; (b) market understanding ability and (c) the ability of joining partners. The cases reinforce the understanding of the internationalization as a learning process that has integrated these companies to the international footwear supply chain dynamics since the eighties.

This study aims at contributing to the analysis of the evolution of apparel industry in Brazil by answering the following questions: (a) Does global sourcing still explain the value upgrading process in the apparel production chains?; (b) Are there new sources of value upgrading to be considered?; (c) Is the dynamics of the apparel production pervaded by a phenomenon that is strongly related to a cultural and creative know-how? Two theoretical approaches are considered to unveil the value upgrading process in the apparel production: (a) theory about global value chains and (b) studies about cultural and creative industries. To investigate the research questions we analyzed the case of the Brazilian apparel industry evolution through the use of a methodological perspective nurtured by aspects of grounded theory. The findings of this study indicate that companies are able to upgrade not only through improvements in manufacturing steps but also by means of incorporating elements of cultural distinction in the apparel production. Analysis of the Brazilian case led us to propose an integrative theoretical approach where elements of the global apparel value chains are combined with studies of cultural and creative industries. We consider that an integrative approach can better explain value creation in the apparel industry in a context of new markets, where there is not only the development of apparel manufacturing clusters but also the emergence of a unique and local fashion apparel chain.

Philosophical basis for decision and action understanding are presented at this paper. Two different theoretical approaches are investigated. One of them explore the differences between Weber and Habermas propositions about human action. The other one presents remarks about decision process concept since Simon. The purpose of the article is to underline that both approaches shows a similar change on action and decision conceptions. The rational action and decision conception gives place to a social constructed action conception. The rational actor view gives place to a self constitution based on networks of sense view.

Human Capital Theory (HCT) has helped to explain problems related to education and economic development. This study uses HCT to understand the phenomenon of the availability or shortage of human resources with training in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and others, which are essential for the development companies in a knowledge economy. The main objective of this article is to propose dimensions, categories and elements of analysis, identified in HCT, that favor the analysis of the phenomenon of the availability or shortage of these human resources. To achieve this goal, a literature review was performed on HCT, considering both seminal and contemporary references. This study proposes aspects related to training and qualification, the presence of motivating factors at an organizational level, the potential for professional mobility, and practices of investment in career development, as explanatory factors for understanding the problem of availability/shortage of human Disponível em: www.univali.br/periodicos ISSN: 1983-716X Revista Alcance – Eletrônica – vol. 24 – n. 1 – jan./mar. 2017 67 resources professionals with training in the areas of Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and others.

The purpose of this paper is to suggest a role for Jesuit universities to play in the evolving collaboration among business, government, and academia. Specifically, this paper will identify an “innovation triangle” whose aim is the creation of innovative ways to meet the challenges of a global economy. For purposes of the International Association of Jesuit Business Schools 2015 Conference in Montevideo, Uruguay, the subject area is “Jesuit inspiration at the university level: business challenges.” Our methodology consists of evaluating the role of Jesuit universities through the case study of a conference organized by the presenters of this paper. Although not actually held, the conference was scheduled to take place at Unisinos Business School in Sao Leopoldo, Brazil. Entitled “Doing Brazil in Brazil,” it involved a new structure in which participants were to work alongside government officials, university faculty, and students while exploring the ethical dimensions of foreign investment and business in Brazil. This was to have been done in conjunction with a techpark adjacent to the university.

The objective of this paper is to analyze the scientific production carried out on a decade of studies on internationalization of higher education. For this, the database ISI Web of Science/Knowledge was the source for research and selection of articles published about this subject from 2004 to 2013. In general, the analysis of selected articles has used a systematic review, focusing on methodological aspects used by the most cited articles in the academy. Results have shown an increasing number of studies in this area, the lack of consolidated research groups and the dispersion of publications in different journals. Moreover, the analysis of the most cited articles during that period indicates a relative balance between theoretical and theoretical-empirical studies, with the use of qualitative approach and the method of case study in theoretical-empirical articles being predominant.
