This study analyzes the internationalization process of medium sized companies of the leather-footwear supply chain, located in the Sinos Valley, in the southern region of Brazil. The two cases of footwear component companies were identifi ed by entrepreneurs from the leatherfootwear supply chain as the most outstanding from the Sinos Valley in internationalization practices. Thus, this study aims to identify which resources those companies mobilize to develop their internationalization process. The organizational competence concept provides the theoretical base for the data interpretation. The results show that the internationalization of those companies is related to a combination of resources associated to three competences: (a) process technology domain; (b) market understanding ability and (c) the ability of joining partners. The cases reinforce the understanding of the internationalization as a learning process that has integrated these companies to the international footwear supply chain dynamics since the eighties.

Abstract Purpose The case of Wines Manufacturer from an Emerging Economy (WMEE) aims to provide a starting point for reflections and discussions about the influence of home country formal institutions on the internationalization process of an industry in an emerging market context. Methodology/approach The plot revolves around the Wines Manufacturer from an Emerging Economy project, which was created to promote the Brazilian wine industry in the international market. A qualitative-descriptive approach was applied to the study, and data collection was conducted through primary and secondary sources. Findings The context involves the difficulty of positioning Brazilian wines in both the domestic and international markets, especially fine wines. The relationship networks built during internationalization processes (in most cases promoted by formal institutions such as WMEE) help to shape strategies for Brazilian wineries. Originality/value Doing business in international markets has made Brazilian wine known worldwide and internationalized wineries can attain new levels of learning, which can be transposed into their domestic operations. If, on the one hand, institutions are important for promoting the industry and its internationalization process, on the other hand, it is equally true that the fragmented institutional structure and their overlapped roles generate many conflicts.

The objective of this paper is to analyze the scientific production carried out on a decade of studies on internationalization of higher education. For this, the database ISI Web of Science/Knowledge was the source for research and selection of articles published about this subject from 2004 to 2013. In general, the analysis of selected articles has used a systematic review, focusing on methodological aspects used by the most cited articles in the academy. Results have shown an increasing number of studies in this area, the lack of consolidated research groups and the dispersion of publications in different journals. Moreover, the analysis of the most cited articles during that period indicates a relative balance between theoretical and theoretical-empirical studies, with the use of qualitative approach and the method of case study in theoretical-empirical articles being predominant.
