OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to assess oxidative stress and antioxidant profile in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) using serum and salivary samples and to compare these biomarkers in a group of healthy subjects. PATIENTS AND METHODS Twenty-one recently diagnosed patients with OLP and 20 healthy controls with matched periodontal status were recruited to the study. Total antioxidant activity (TAA) and lipid peroxidation product malondialdehyde (MDA) in both serum and saliva were determined. Univariate comparisons between the two groups were made for quantitative and categorical variables to determine any significant differences. RESULTS In OLP patients, total antioxidant defense (TAA) was significantly lower than that in healthy subjects in their serum samples (P = 0.01). Salivary MDA levels were significantly higher in the OLP group compared with healthy subjects (P = 0.03). A significant correlation was found between serum and saliva TAA estimates in patients with OLP (r = 0.714 and P = 0.0001) and in the control group (r = 0.69 and P = 0.001). Significant correlation was also found between serum and saliva MDA values in control group (r = 0.464 and P = 0.04). A significant inverse correlation was found between salivary MDA and TAA values in the control group (r = -0.598 and P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study suggest an increased oxidative stress and imbalance in the antioxidant defense system in biological fluids of patients with OLP. These findings may reflect the disease phenomenon of OLP rather than a causal effect and their role in pathogenesis and transformation of OLP to cancer, if any, needs further elucidation.

Yegane Güven; Sami Yıldırım; Çetin Kasapoĝlu

Zinc is a trace element important to bone mineralization as well as, in general, nutrition. It is known that cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) affects bone metabolism. In this study toxic doses of vitamin D3 were injected subcutaneously (25 μg/d) to rats for 5 wk. It caused a significant increase in serum zinc levels (p<0.02). On the other hand, no significant increase was detected in the other groups. Excessive amounts of vitamin D3 caused bone breakdown and increased the levels of zinc in blood.

OZET Tukurugun antibakteriyel etki gosteren faktorlerinden biri de peroksidaz enzimidir. Bu calismada literaturde, gingivitis sikligi fazla oldugu belirtilen 10-15 yas grubundaki cocuklarda tukuruk peroksidaz aktivitesi ve plak birikimi tayin edilmistir. Deney grubunda ap-roksimal plak indeksi (API) ve diseti oldugu kanama indeksi (SBI) sirasiyla %55.78±24.2, %21.78 ± 16.5 olup, tukuruk peroksidaz aktivitesi 0.327 ± 0.09 IU/ml bulunmustur. Kontrol grubunda bu degerlerin %10.67 ± 3.98, %Q, 0.12 ± 0.032 IU/ml oldugu saptanmistir. Istatistiksel olarak, kontrol grubuna gore SBI sonuclari arasinda 0.001<p<0.01, API ve peroksidaz aktivitesinde p<0.001 duzeyinde anlamli farklar saptanmistir. Tukurukte peroksidaz aktivitesi tayininin periodontal hastaligin erken belirteci olarak kullanilabilecegi sonucuna varilmistir. Anahtar sozcukler: Tukuruk, peroksidaz, plak birikimi. Abbstract One of the antibacterial factor of saliva is the peroxidase enzyme. In this research, plaque accumulation and peroxidase activity were estimated of children aged 10-15 years who had a high prevalence of gingivitis which was emphasized in literature. It was found that approximal plaque index (API) was 55.78 ±24.2 %, sulcus bleeding index (SBI) was 21.78 ± 16.5% and salivary peroxidase activity was 0.327 i 0.09 IU/ml in tlie experimental group. Tliesevalu-es were detected respectively as 10.67 ± 3.98%, 0%, and 0.12 ± 0.032 IU in tlie control group. Statistically, significant differences were detected betweei SBI (0.001<p<0.01), API, salivary peroxidase activity (p<0.001) and control group. It was concluded that the estimation of salivary peroxidase activity might be a laboratory marker for periodontal disease. Key words: Saliva, peroxidase, plaque accumulation.

The effect of heat-stable extract from bovine sublingual salivary glands on the carbohydrate metabolism of the rabbit

Yegane Güven; H. Öz; H. Omidfar

This extract (SLF3) caused hyperglycaemia when injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) into rabbits (20 mg/kg body wt) which was maximal at 0.5 h and took 2 h to return to the initial value. SLF3 also produced a two-fold increase in corticosteroid levels compared to controls, so the increase in blood glucose was probably mediated by adrenal cortical hormone stimulation.
