A Study on the Historical Changes and Improvements in Food and Culture in the Korean Decimal Classification

Mi-Hwa Lee; Yeon-Kyoung Chung

The purposes of this study are to review the historical development of food and culture in the KDC (Korean Decimal Classification) and to propose improvements of the KDC to classify materials of food and culture by using the KDC effectively. First of all, changes of classification numbers and headings related to food and culture from the 1st edition to the 5th edition of the KDC were examined. Recent books about food and culture were examined and were classified according to the latest edition of the KDC. Several problems were found including a lack of headings, including notes in food and culture, a lack of headings about Korean foods in particular and reflections about various foods from other countries, a lack of detailed relative headings, and the remaining western oriented headings. Other classification systems about food and culture were analyzed and it was found that there was a need to have new headings for classifying Korean traditional foods and table services, new formats for a relative index, detailed notes, and changes in western oriented headings.

A Study on the Library Service Use and Needs of Disabled Users in Korea

Yeon-Kyoung Chung; Sung-Jin Kim

A Study on the Analysis of the Korean Decimal Classification(KDC) and Users` Needs in Libraries for Children in Korea

Yeon-Kyoung Chung; Yoon-Kyung Choi

The purpose of this study is to improve the classification focused on KDC 4th edition for children`s materials. For the study, literature study, KDC application and user survey in 51 libraries for children were performed. Based on the results, classification for children`s materials is proposed to improve in two ways: classification system itself and arrangement in the shelf. First of all, it is required to scatter the subjects that are centered on specific numbers and to allow various types, characteristics and literature genre of children`s materials to be classified in KDC. KDC also should provide specific notes and classification guidelines for interdisciplinary subjects. In the shelf arrangement, it is proposed to consider the introduction of user-friendly call number and arrangement principles by ages or titles. In the end, it is necessary to compose various collections that represent users` needs, and the user education program is needed.

A Study on Structure of a Faceted Classification for Organizing Korean Food Information

Yeon-Kyoung Chung

The purpose of this study is to develop a faceted classification that enables the conceptualization and the organization of Korean food information. 23,470 terms were collected, categorized, and analyzed from the table of contents in 776 monographs and directory headings in portal sites related to Korean food. In order to develop the Korean food classification, common properties were analyzed in the process of categorizing terms. Then basic facets and subfacets were defined and assigned, and hierarchies among facets and concepts, citation orders, and notations were decided. As a result, the classification scheme consisted of 16 basic facets and 85 subfacets. The citation order of facets was proposed in order of Personality facet (kinds of dishes), Matter facet (materials, cooking utensils/equipment/containers, and nutrients), Energy facet (cooking processes and techniques, eating sense, type of cooking, table services, and agents of cooking), Space facet (countries/ethnic groups/geography, and eating places), Time facet (situation/purposes, season, time of meals, periods, and ages). The result of this study will be used for organizing, searching, retrieving, and providing Korean food information effectively around the world. Also, it will provide a foundation for developing subject-oriented classification using facet analysis in other disciplines.

A Study on Developing Modifications to the Dewey Decimal Classification for Korean Foods

Yeon-Kyoung Chung; Yoon-Kyung Choi

Based upon its variety and specialties, Korean food has the potential power to become globalized, and a national public relations strategy for global competitiveness. In this process, a proper organization of information about Korean foods should be given a priority. The purposes of this study are to analyze the classification status and case studies of Korean foods in Korean libraries, to understand how much Korean foods are represented in the classification scheme and what should be improved, and to suggest a modified expansion of DDC 22. In so doing, an attempt is made to provide some evidences of the revision of DDC 22 as well as useful practices of modified DDC 22 in Korean libraries.
