CdS nanotubes were synthesized via a new method, which employed TM01-type microwave irradiation as a template. The reactions were completed in aqueous solution at room temperature. The products were investigated with X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The formation mechanism of CdS nanotubes with a face centered cubic structure is proposed.

Abstract α-MnSe crystallites were prepared by solvothermal reaction in ethylenediamine at 190 °C. X-ray diffraction gave the α-MnSe phase of product, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated the valence state of Mn2+ and Se2−. The flaky morphology was found by the transmission electron microscope images. The optimal synthetic conditions were explored by using other nitrogen-containing solvents, and lowering the reaction temperature.

Nanocrystalline α-NiS and β-NiS were synthesized through a solvothermal reducing process at 110 °C with ethanol and pyridine as solvent, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectra (ICP-AES) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the samples. In this reaction, due to the different properties of the solvents, solvent determines the phases of as-prepared NiS. And it was found that the as-prepared α-NiS had higher phase stability than the normal NiS.

Abstract During a study of graphitization in a commercial Acheson furnace, alpha silicon carbide whiskers were accidentally found, which belongs to the 5H-type. The whiskers are about 2–300 μm in diameter and 5–50 mm long. The whiskers were studied by XRD and SEM, and the formation conditions of the whiskers were discussed.

A new kind of ternary sulfide nanotubes, Cu5.5FeS6.5 nanotubes, was synthesized in autoclaves at 195 °C and it was found that armchair, zigzag and complex arrangements exist in the nanotubes.
