A split-band directly modulated fiber-optical cable television system employing light injection and optoelectronic feedback techniques is proposed and demonstrated. The light injection technique enhances the laser resonance frequency, and the optoelectronic feedback technique further enhances it, leading to an improvement in the systems overall performances. Good performances of carrier-to-noise ratio, composite second order, and composite triple beat were achieved for the full channel band over a 100-km single-mode fiber transport

A bidirectional radio-over-dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing transport system using injection-locked and optoelectronic feedback controlled vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) is proposed and demonstrated. It is shown that the system performance, which is evaluated by using bit-error rate, error vector magnitude, and intermodulation distortion-to-carrier ratio, is improved due to using injection-locked and feedback controlled VCSELs

A bidirectional dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) passive optical network (PON) based on injection-locked vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers and a data comparator is proposed and demonstrated. Improved performance with respect to bit error rate and eye diagram was observed. Bidirectional transmission in DWDM-PON architecture is a very attractive option; the capacity of the optical network can be expanded relatively easily in that way.

We propose and demonstrate a type of broadband light source (BLS) based on mutually injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes (F-P LDs). By mutually injection-locked F-P LDs, we realized a BLS with flatness and multimode output spectrum. The proposed BLS generates a 100GHz spaced optical frequency comb with fifteen modes, ranging from 1532 to 1544nm with a flatness of < 4dB. Consequently, the mutually injection-locked F-P LDs light source could be relatively simple and cost-effective compared with other demonstrated light source schemes.

Yu-Chieh Chi; Hai-Han Lu; Po-Chou Lai; Hoshin Yee; Sha-Jye Tzeng

A directly modulated CATV/radio-on-fiber (ROF) transport system based on light injection and optoelectronic feedback techniques, and photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is proposed and demonstrated. Excellent performances of CNR, CSO and CTB were obtained for CATV band; as well as low BER and third order intermodulation distortion to carrier ratio (IMD3/C) values were achieved for ROF band.

Employing photonic crystal fiber to improve composite second-order and composite triple-beat performances in a two-wavelength wavelength-division-multiplexing transport system

A two-wavelength wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) externally modulated transport system employing photonic crystal fiber (PCF) as a dispersion compensation device to compensate the fiber dispersion and to reduce the cross-phase modulation (XPM)–induced cross talk is proposed and demonstrated. In comparison with a two-wavelength WDM externally modulated transport system without a dispersion compensation device or with a conventional dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) as a dispersion compensation device, good performances of composite second-order (CSO) and composite triple beat (CTB) were obtained accompanied by acceptable carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) in our proposed system.

Bidirectional HDTV/Gigabit Ethernet/CATV over hybrid dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (DWDM-PON) based on injection-locked vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) and distributed feedback (DFB) laser diodes as transmitters were proposed and demonstrated. Services with 129 HDTV channels, 1.25 Gb/s Gigabit Ethernet connection, and 77 CATV channels were successfully demonstrated over 40 km single-mode fiber (SMF) links. Good performance of bit error rate (BER)/carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR)/composite second order (CSO)/composite triple beat (CTB) were achieved in our proposed bidirectional DWDM-PON.

A radio-on-dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) transport system for personal handy system (PHS)/vehicle information and communication system (VICS)/electronic toll collection (ETC)/satellite broadcasting (SB) applications was proposed and demonstrated. Improved performance of bit error rate (BER) over a-100 km of large effective area fiber (LEAF) was obtained. Signal qualities meet the PHS demand with a data signal of 1.9GHz/10Mbps, VICS demand with a data signal of 2.5GHz/12Mbps, ETC demand with a data signal of 5.8GHz/20Mbps, and SB demand with a data signal of 12GHz/25Mbps.
