Organometallic complexes containing antimony and aluminum II. Preparation of pentaethylantimony and its reactions with aluminum compounds, AlEtnCl3-n

Yukichi Takashi

Pentaethylantimony has been prepared by the reactions of ethylantimony(V) chlorides with diethylmagnesium and with ethyllithium. Pentaethylantimony reacts with methanol to give tetraethylantimony methoxide. A series of the organometallic complexes shown by the formulas of [SbEt4] [AlEtnCl4-n] and [SbEt4] [Al2EtnCl7-n] has been prepared by the reactions of pentaethylantimony with various aluminum compounds, AlEtnCl3-n. The exact structures of the complexes [SbEt4] [AlEt4] and[SbEt4] [Al2Et7], obtained by the reactions of pentaethylantimony with triethylaluminum, have not been clarified yet. The simple adduct structures SbEt5-AlEt3 and SbEt5-2 AlEt3, respectively, may be also taken for these complexes. The complexes obtained by the reactions of pentaethylantimony with aluminum compounds having at least one chlorine atom are confirmed to be stibonium complex salts.

Organometallic complexes containing antimony and aluminum : I. Complex formation of alkylantimony compouunds with aluminum compounds, a1etnC13-n

Yukichi Takashi; Itsuho Aishima

Abstract The reactions of antimony trichloride with excess triethylylaluminum and with diethylaluminum chloride have been studied. The former reaction gives the complex [SbEt4] [Al2Et5Cl2] and the latter the complex [SbEt4] [AlCl4]. A series of the organometallic complexes containing antimony and aluminum has been prepared by the reactions of quinquevalent ethylantimony halides, i.e. triethylantimony dihalide, tetraethylstibonium halides with various aluminum compounds, AlEtnCl3-n. The proposed formulas of these complexes are shown as [SbEt4] [AlEtnX4-n] (I), [SbEt4] [Al2EtnX7-n] (II) and SbEt3X2-nAIX3 (III), where X is halogen. The former two are thought to be ionic stibonium complex salts and the latter simple adducts. The behavior of 1:1 complex (I) for aluminum alkyls has further been clarified. Triethylstibine also forms various complexes with aluminum compounds, AlEtnCl3-n. The proposed formulas of these complexes are shown as mSbEt3-nAlEtm, Cl3-m, (IV) and SbEt3-SbEt2Cl-AlCl3 (V). The ionic properties of complexes (IV) have been elucidated.
