A Trauma-Theoretical Reading of Hugues C. Pernath's War Poetry

Summary Dominick LaCapra has pointed out that from a trauma-theoretical perspective definitions which are too generally formulated lead to an unstable distinction between victim and commentator. According to LaCapra, the idea that “contemporary culture, or even all history, is essentially traumatic or that everyone in the post-Holocaust context is a survivor” is dubious (LaCapra 2001: x-xii). If LaCapras findings are interpreted in a narrow sense, only Holocaust victims meet the criteria for traumatic experience. The aim of this article, which focuses on the poetry of the canonical Flemish poet, Hugues C. Pernath (1931-1975), is to establish a pertinent definition that will justify the inclusion of literary projects by certain post-war poets within trauma-theoretical discourse. Pernath was so moved by visiting Auschwitz and living with a Jewish survivor that his notions about humanity were fundamentally shaken. This rupture in his world view, which is also reflected in his poetry, can thus be called traumatic. However, Pernaths poetry has never before been examined within this conceptual framework. Through the analysis of selected texts, this paper attempts to show how a writer who has not directly suffered the scarring consequences of war may nonetheless bear testimony to such a traumatic experience. The article argues that the specific idiom of the poet, with its interrupted syntax, elliptical sentence structures, semantic ambivalences, and various hitches in the text, as well as the handling of silences, reveals his central concern with problematising conventional communication in the face of trauma.

'Zijde blij de Hitlerjeugd, nie meer dan?' 'Vooruit en Pierken de Spiegelleire op het breukvlak van twee discoursen: van socialisme naar nationaalsocialisme (1931-1944)

In dit artikel wordt vanuit een tekstvergelijkend perspectief de ‘Brief van Pierken’ in de krant Vooruit (1931-1944) bestudeerd. Richard Minne en Frits van den Berghe publiceerden aanvankelijk in Koekoek, en vanaf 1935 in Vooruit, wekelijks een ‘Brief van Pierken’. Tijdens de Duitse bezetting vluchtte de redactie van Vooruit naar het buitenland en werden de redactionele activiteiten overgenomen door figuren die met de bezetter collaboreerden. Ondanks de afwezigheid van Minne (Van den Berghe overleed in 1939) werd de ‘Brief van Pierken’ voortgezet in de krant. De man die zich in de ‘gestolen’ Vooruit schuilhield achter de figuur van Pierken was Leo Poppe. De ideologiekritische ‘Brieven van Pierken’ in de periode 1931-1939 respectievelijk 1940-1944 worden eerst in hun brede historische en internationale context gesitueerd. Politieke, economische en sociale bewegingen op het internationale forum van de jaren 1930 worden in een kort overzicht gepresenteerd. Voorts wordt ingegaan op de geschiedenis en het specifieke karakter van de ‘Brief van Pierken’. In een tweede deel van deze bijdrage verschuift de focus van historiciteit naar discours. In een discoursanalytische studie van de ‘Brieven’, meer bepaald een onderzoek naar ideologisch geladen passages, wordt duidelijk welke verschuivingen zich in de denkwereld van Pierken de Spiegelleire hebben voltrokken.
