Antifungal activity of several root canal sealers against Candida albicans

Abstract Objective. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the antifungal activity of several root canal sealers (iRoot SP, MTA Fillapex and GuttaFlow) against Candida albicans and compare them to that of AH Plus Jet. Materials and methods. A 10 μL fungi in suspension was allowed to directly contact the sealers, which were freshly mixed or allowed to set for 1 or 7 days. Fresh media was then added and survival of fungi was determined by using 10-fold serial dilution and inoculated onto agar plates. After incubation for 48 h, colony-forming units (CFU) were calculated and their log10 values converted. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = 0.05). Results. Freshly mixed AH Plus Jet totally inhibited the growth of fungi and showed the highest antifungal activity. GuttaFlow did not show any significant antifungal activity at all times. Freshly mixed iRoot SP and MTA Fillapex were found to be antifungal. Statistical differences were found between freshly mixed and set samples (p < 0.05) in favor of the former, except GuttaFlow. No statistically significant differences were found among the tested sealers at the 1 and 7-day samples (p > 0.05). Conclusions. Fresh AH Plus Jet had very potent antifungal activity. All sealers, except GuttaFlow, exhibited antifungal activity when freshly mixed.

Bulk-Fill restorative materials in primary tooth: An intrapulpal temperature changes study

Objectives: It was aimed to investigate the temperature changes in primary teeth pulp chamber during the curing/setting of bulk-fill restorative materials with different nanoparticle contents. Methods: Twenty-five extracted, primary mandibular second molars were prepared as a Class II cavity. Five bulk-fill restorative materials consisting of Equia Fil (HVGIC), glass carbomer (GC) cement, Sonic Fill (SF), X-tra Fil (XF), and Quix Fil (QF) were tested. The measurement of the pulp chamber temperature changes (starting temperature 37°C) during setting/curing was performed with a J type thermocouple. The data, differences between highest and initial temperature values, were recorded and analyzed by one-way ANOVA. Results: The temperature changes in the pulp chamber were in EF (2.81°C), GC (7.92°C), SF (3.33°C), XF (3.43°C), and QF (3.02°C). There were statistically significant differences between temperature changes in groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The tested bulk-fill resin composites and high-viscosity glass ionomer cement do not increase the intrapulpal temperature in primary teeth during the curing/setting.

Evaluation of patient with Holt-Oram syndrome in terms of oral and maxillofacial findings

The Holt-Oram syndrome (HOS) is a genetic disorder with autosomal dominant inheritance associated with anomalies in upper extremities and heart and affects one out of every 100,000 live births. Maxillofacial development is also affected by these skeletal abnormalities. Although there are many studies about the HOS in the literature, the data about the development of oral and maxillofacial development are very few. In this study, evaluation of a child with the HOS is made in terms of dental and gingival health, oral and maxillofacial formation, and cephalometric analysis measurements are made for the 1 st time in the literature and identified findings are discussed in company with the literature.

The effects of idiopathic hypoparathyroidism on dental development

Hypoparathyroidism cases without etiology diagnosed in the first 10 years of life are called as idiopathic hypoparathyroidism (IHP). IHP is a rare endocrinological disorder among hypoparathyroidism cases, and the anomalies accompanying it are infrequently observed. Ca ++ metabolism disorders occurring during the formation of tooth germs may cause enamel defects in teeth, enamel hypoplasia, enlarged pulp chambers, short roots, late eruptions, and missing teeth. The case presented in this article is a good example in terms of demonstrating how tooth damage ends with the commencement of treatment. Within this article, the results of a 9-year-old male IHP patient are discussed based on the literature. The said patient could not be diagnosed until the age of 18 months so developed enamel hypoplasia as well as enamel defects in this period due to abnormal mineralization, and no problems were observed in his dental tissue that formed after the ionic equilibrium was ensured following the diagnosis.

Maksiller Lateral Diş ile Süpernümerer Diş Füzyonu ve Tedavisi: Bir Olgu Sunumu

Fusion is a dental anomaly which causes problems such as aesthetics, periodontal, orthodontic disease. The purpose of this study is to provide aesthetics by extraction of supernumerary fused tooth with lateral tooth that is causing lack of space. It is a sharing case that aestetic and function were ensured by formed lateral tooth. 10 years old boy patient admitted to our clinic with the complaint of his tooth curvature. According to history of the patient, there is no systemic disease of the patient. No problems were observed in the extraoral diagnosis. In the intraoral diagnosis, presence of supernumerary teeth and fused with lateral tooth was observed. In the radiological diagnosis, roots are discrete. Another pathology were not encountered in the mouth. It was planned that the separation of the fused teeth by cut by cutters from junction line and distopalatinal supernumerary tooth was extracted. Perforation was observed on the lateral tooth and treated with CVEK amputation method. Treatment was completed with composite restoration. Controls of patient performed at 12 months. Treatment provided aesthetics by extraction of supernumerary fused tooth with lateral tooth that is causing lack of space so malalignment of teeth has disappeared. SANTRAL DEV HÜCRELİ GRANÜLOMANIN İLİAK GREFT VE HAREKETLİ YER TUTUCU APAREY İLE REHABİLİTASYONU: OLGU SUNUMU

Amac: Santral dev hucreli granuloma siklikla mandi- bula ve maksillada lokalize olan, non-odontojenik patolojik bir lezyondur. Etiyolojisi tam olarak bilinme- mektedir. Lezyonun cerrahi olarak uzaklastirilmasi en cok uygulanan tedavi yontemidir. Amacimiz bu vakada santral dev hucreli granulomanin iliak greft ve hareketli yer tutucu aparey kullanilarak rehabili- tasyonunu rapor etmektir. Vaka raporu: 10 yasindaki erkek hasta klinigimize mandibula anterior sol bolgede sislik sikayetiyle basvurdu. Alinan anamnezde, sikayetin oldugu bolgeye yaklasik 1 yil once cerrahi bir mudahale yapildigi, fakat sisligin alti ay once tekrar olustugu ogrenildi. Genel anestezi altinda lezyon cikartildi. Mandibular sol santral, lateral, kanin ve birinci premolar disler cekildi. Mandibulada olusan defekt iliak greftle onarildi. Cikarilan kitlenin histopatolojik incelemesi yapildi ve santral dev hucreli granulom tanisi konuldu. Operasyon sonrasi yapilan 12 aylik takipte herhangi bir problemle karsilasilmadi. Daha sonra hastaya hareketli yer tutucu bir aparey yapildi. Sonuc: Literaturde santral dev hucreli granulom gibi agresif lezyonlarin %72 rekurens orani oldugu gorul- mektedir. Rekurens gosteren vakalarda kortikostreoid enjeksiyonu, sistemik kalsitonin uygulamasi gibi konservatif yontemlerin basarisi kesin degildir. Cerrahi tedavi cene kemiklerinde major defektlere neden ola- bilir ve fasiyal konturu bozabilir. Boyle bir durumda de- fektin iliak greftle tamiri estetik problemleri cozecektir ve protezle rehabilitasyon imkani sunacaktir.
