Wen-Tong Chen; Zhi-Gang Luo; Jiu-Hui Liu; Hua-Long Chen; Han-Mao Kuang

The first crystalline TPPS complex [Zn(en)TPPS][Zn(en)3] (where en is ethylenediamine and TPPS is tetraphenylporphyrin tetrasulfonic acid) has been synthesised via a solvothermal reaction and structurally characterised by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Zn(en)TPPS][Zn(en)3 has discrete [Zn(en)TPPS]2– and [Zn(en)3]2+ moieties, which are interconnected via hydrogen bonds to form a three-dimensional supramolecular framework that possesses a large void space (1507.6 Å3) corresponding to 22.5% of the unit-cell volume. The UV-Vis spectrum and photoluminescence have also been studied in detail.

Wen-Tong Chen; Zhi-Gang Luo; Ya-Ping Xu; Qiu-Yan Luo; Jiu-Hui Liu

A series of transition metal-n cyanopyridines (i.e. pyridine-n-carbonitrile; n = 2, 3, 4) complexes with one-dimensional (1-D) structures, [CuCl2(pyridine-3-carbonitrile)2] n , [CuCl2(pyridine-4-carbonitrile)2] n and [CoCl2(pyridine-4-carbonitrile)2] n , have been synthesised via hydrothermal reactions and structurally characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All these complexes feature infinite 1-D chain-like structures. Photoluminescent investigation reveals that the title complexes display strong emissions which may originate from π→π* charge-transfer interaction of the ligands.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, Properties, and Theoretical Study of CdI2(phen)2 (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline)

Wen-Tong Chen; Zhong-Liang Yao; Han-Mao Kuang; Hua-Long Chen; Zhi-Gang Luo

A cadmium compound CdI2(phen)2, (1) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), was been synthesized via a hydrothermal reaction and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The cadmium ion is coordinated by two terminal iodine ions and four nitrogen atoms from two coordinating phen molecules, constructing a distorted octahedron. Compound 1 features an isolated structure. Photoluminescent study shows that compound 1 exhibits a strong and broad emission in the blue region. Theoretical investigation reveals that the emission can be attributed to ligand to ligand charge transfer.

Wen-Tong Chen; Ji-Wu Wen; Zhi-Gang Luo; Zhong-Liang Yao

Two new isonicotinic acid-containing lanthanide complexes, [Eu(HL)3(H2O)2]2n·(nH5O2)(nHgCl5)(2nHgCl4)·(2nH2O) (1) and [GdL2(H2O)4]nnCl (2) (HL = isonicotinic acid), have been synthesized via hydrothermal reactions and structurally characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffractions. Complex 1 crystallizes in the space group C2/c of the monoclinic system with four formula units in a cell: a = 24.2129(9), b = 20.7750(8), c = 15.2980(6) Å, β = 128.32°, V = 6037.1(4) Å3, C36H47Cl12Eu2Hg3N6O20, Mr = 2214.89, Dc = 2.437 g/cm3, S = 0.994, μ(MoKα) = 10.253 mm–1, F(000) = 4140, R = 0.0425 and wR = 0.0800. Complex 2 crystallizes in the space group Pbcn of the orthorhombic system with four formula units in a cell: a = 8.947(4), b = 19.616(9), c = 10.086(5) Å, V = 1770.1(14) Å3, C12H16ClGdN2O8, Mr = 508.97, Dc = 1.910 g/cm3, S = 1.009, μ(MoKα) = 3.938 mm–1, F(000) = 988, R = 0.0276 and wR = 0.0674. Both complexes are characteristic of infinite one-dimensional (1-D) polycationic chain-like structures.

A series of lanthanide porphyrins, [LnIII(TPPSIV)]n·nH5O2 (Ln = La, Sm, Eu; H2TPPS = tetra(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin), have been synthesized through solvothermal reactions and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These compounds are characterized by a condensed three-dimensional (3-D) porous open framework. Magnetic measurements reveal that these compounds show ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic behavior, respectively. All of the compounds exhibit highly thermal stability. The FT-IR and adsorption measurement of CO2 were also studied.

In situ synthesis and structure of FeCl4(4,4′-diethyl-4,4′-bipyh) (bipy = bipyridine)

Wen-Tong Chen; Zhi-Gang Luo; Dong-Sheng Liu; Ya-Ping Xu; Qiu-Yan Luo

A novel viologen(4,4′-bipyridinium)-based compound FeCl4(4,4′-diethyl-4,4′-bipyH) (1) (bipy = bipyridine), in which 4,4′-diethyl-4,4′-bipyH (MQ+) was generated in situ, is synthesized via the hydrothermal reaction and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure analysis reveals that the title compound features an isolated structure based on 4,4′-diethyl-4,4′-bipyH moieties and an iron atom terminally bound by four chlorine atoms. The 4,4′-diethyl-4,4′-bipyH moieties and (FeCl4)− anions are interconnected by hydrogen bonds to form a 3D supramolecular framework.

A novel porphyrin with a two-dimensional topology and highly thermal stability

Wen-Tong Chen; Zhi-Gang Luo; Hua-Long Chen; Han-Mao Kuang; Dong-Sheng Liu

A novel iron porphyrin [FeTCPP] n [TCPP = meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin] has been synthesised via a hydrothermal reaction and structurally characterised. It has a two-dimensional structure and is thermally stable up to 320°C. UV–Vis, FT–IR and fluorescence data are also reported. Porphyrins have interesting roles in nature such as in green leaves and red blood cells, as well as applications in medicine, catalysis, optics, conductive materials, magnetism and solar energy conversion.
