EMMNet: sensor networking for electricity meter monitoring.

Zhiting Lin; Jie Zheng; Yu-Sheng Ji; Baohua Zhao; Yu-Gui Qu; Xu-Dong Huang; Xiu-Fang Jiang

Smart sensors are emerging as a promising technology for a large number of application domains. This paper presents a collection of requirements and guidelines that serve as a basis for a general smart sensor architecture to monitor electricity meters. It also presents an electricity meter monitoring network, named EMMNet, comprised of data collectors, data concentrators, hand-held devices, a centralized server, and clients. EMMNet provides long-distance communication capabilities, which make it suitable suitable for complex urban environments. In addition, the operational cost of EMMNet is low, compared with other existing remote meter monitoring systems based on GPRS. A new dynamic tree protocol based on the application requirements which can significantly improve the reliability of the network is also proposed. We are currently conducting tests on five networks and investigating network problems for further improvements. Evaluation results indicate that EMMNet enhances the efficiency and accuracy in the reading, recording, and calibration of electricity meters.

Compromised nodes in wireless sensor network

Zhiting Lin; Yu-Gui Qu; Li Jing; Baohua Zhao

Sensor webs consisting of nodes with limited battery power and wireless communication are deployed to collect useful information from a variety of environments. A new challenge in the wireless sensor networks (WSN) is the compromised nodes problem. Compromised nodes may exhibit arbitrary behavior and may collude with other compromised nodes. In this paper, we propose a novel security strategy with assistant cluster heads, SSACH, which focuses on limiting the attack from compromised nodes. It adds the Assistant Cluster Heads (ACH) so as to monitor Cluster Head (CH) and take precautions against the inside attack.

Analysis and design of mobile Wireless Social Model

Zhiting Lin; Yu-Gui Qu; Xiaofang Zhou; Bao hua Zhao

Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) are characterized by very long delay paths and frequent network partitions. Most existing protocols are based on simplistic models which differ from real scenarios or real traces which do not allow for sensitivity analysis. In this paper, we analyze the differences between the Social Network (SN) and the Wireless Social Network (W-SN) in terms of the clustering coefficient, characteristic path length, community size, and membership number. We observe that the clustering coefficient, community size and membership number in the W-SN are bigger than those in the SN, while the character path length in W-SN becomes smaller. And then we propose a new Wireless Social Model (WSM) based on community character. Node in WSM is driven by the α-Model and has an equal probability to move to one of his adjacent vertices. We evaluate our model via real traces supplied by Dartmouth College, which shows that our wireless social mobile model offers a good approximation of real movements.

An Energy-Efficiency Route Protocol for MIMO-Based Wireless Sensor Networks

Qinghua Wang; Yu-Gui Qu; Zhiting Lin; Baohua Zhao

A novel multihop energy-efficiency routing protocol for MIMO-based WSN is proposed in this paper. The protocol integrates cooperative MIMO technology with the multihop routing and energy consumption. When building route, the node not only consider its own energy consumption, but also consider the cost to the base station of the next hop node, thus the end-to-end energy consumption is decreased. Simulation results indicate that this protocol can obviously reduces the networks energy consumption.
