The common featureof these materials is that the bulk material forms are layeredstructures with strong covalent bonding in each layer andweak van der Waals forces between the layers. Therefore, single or few-layer nanosheets of these materials can beobtained by using adhesive tapes for mechanical cleavage.

Weijia Zhou; Zongyou Yin; Yaping Du; Xiao Huang; Zhiyuan Zeng; Zhanxi Fan; Hong Liu; Jiyang Wang; Hua Zhang

MoS(2) nanosheet-coated TiO(2) nanobelt heterostructures--referred to as TiO(2)@MoS(2)--with a 3D hierarchical configuration are prepared via a hydrothermal reaction. The TiO(2) nanobelts used as a synthetic template inhibit the growth of MoS(2) crystals along the c-axis, resulting in a few-layer MoS(2) nanosheet coating on the TiO(2) nanobelts. The as-prepared TiO(2)@MoS(2) heterostructure shows a high photocatalytic hydrogen production even without the Pt co-catalyst. Importantly, the TiO(2)@MoS(2) heterostructure with 50 wt% of MoS(2) exhibits the highest hydrogen production rate of 1.6 mmol h(-1) g(-1). Moreover, such a heterostructure possesses a strong adsorption ability towards organic dyes and shows high performance in photocatalytic degradation of the dye molecules.

Graphene, the thinnest two dimensional carbon material, has become the subject of intensive investigation in various research fields because of its remarkable electronic, mechanical, optical and thermal properties. Graphene-based electrodes, fabricated from mechanically cleaved graphene, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown graphene, or massively produced graphene derivatives from bulk graphite, have been applied in a broad range of applications, such as in light emitting diodes, touch screens, field-effect transistors, solar cells, supercapacitors, batteries, and sensors. In this Review, after a short introduction to the properties and synthetic methods of graphene and its derivatives, we will discuss the importance of graphene-based electrodes, their fabrication techniques, and application areas.

Fe3O4 has long been regarded as a promising anode material for lithium ion battery due to its high theoretical capacity, earth abundance, low cost, and nontoxic properties. However, up to now no effective and scalable method has been realized to overcome the bottleneck of poor cyclability and low rate capability. In this article, we report a bottom-up strategy assisted by atomic layer deposition to graft bicontinuous mesoporous nanostructure Fe3O4 onto three-dimensional graphene foams and directly use the composite as the lithium ion battery anode. This electrode exhibits high reversible capacity and fast charging and discharging capability. A high capacity of 785 mAh/g is achieved at 1C rate and is maintained without decay up to 500 cycles. Moreover, the rate of up to 60C is also demonstrated, rendering a fast discharge potential. To our knowledge, this is the best reported rate performance for Fe3O4 in lithium ion battery to date.

Solution-phase epitaxial growth of noble metal nanostructures on dispersible single-layer molybdenum disulfide nanosheets

Xiao Huang; Zhiyuan Zeng; Shuyu Bao; Mengfei Wang; Xiaoying Qi; Zhanxi Fan; Hua Zhang

Compared with the conventional deposition techniques used for the epitaxial growth of metallic structures on a bulk substrate, wet-chemical synthesis based on the dispersible template offers several advantages, including relatively low cost, high throughput, and the capability to prepare metal nanostructures with controllable size and morphology. Here we demonstrate that the solution-processable two-dimensional MoS(2) nanosheet can be used to direct the epitaxial growth of Pd, Pt and Ag nanostructures at ambient conditions. These nanostructures show the major (111) and (101) orientations on the MoS(2)(001) surface. Importantly, the Pt-MoS(2) hybrid nanomaterials exhibit much higher electrocatalytic activity towards the hydrogen evolution reaction compared with the commercial Pt catalysts with the same Pt loading. We believe that nanosheet-templated epitaxial growth of nanostructures via wet-chemical reaction is a promising strategy towards the facile and high-yield production of novel functional materials.

Fabrication of Flexible MoS2 Thin‐Film Transistor Arrays for Practical Gas‐Sensing Applications

Qiyuan He; Zhiyuan Zeng; Zongyou Yin; Hai Li; Shixin Wu; Xiao Huang; Hua Zhang

By combining two kinds of solution-processable two-dimensional materials, a flexible transistor array is fabricated in which MoS(2) thin film is used as the active channel and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) film is used as the drain and source electrodes. The simple device configuration and the 1.5 mm-long MoS(2) channel ensure highly reproducible device fabrication and operation. This flexible transistor array can be used as a highly sensitive gas sensor with excellent reproducibility. Compared to using rGO thin film as the active channel, this new gas sensor exhibits much higher sensitivity. Moreover, functionalization of the MoS(2) thin film with Pt nanoparticles further increases the sensitivity by up to ∼3 times. The successful incorporation of a MoS(2) thin-film into the electronic sensor promises its potential application in various electronic devices.

One-step synthesis of Ni3S2 nanorod@Ni(OH)2nanosheet core–shell nanostructures on a three-dimensional graphene network for high-performance supercapacitors

Weijia Zhou; Xiehong Cao; Zhiyuan Zeng; Wenhui Shi; Yuanyuan Zhu; Qingyu Yan; Hong Liu; Jiyang Wang; Hua Zhang

A three-dimensional graphene network (3DGN) grown on nickel foam is an excellent template for the synthesis of graphene-based composite electrodes for use in supercapacitors. Ni(OH)2nanosheets coated onto single-crystal Ni3S2nanorods grown on the surface of the 3DGN (referred to as the Ni3S2@Ni(OH)2/3DGN) are synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal reaction. SEM, TEM, XRD and Raman spectroscopy are used to investigate the morphological and structural evolution of the Ni3S2@Ni(OH)2/3DGN. Detailed electrochemical characterization shows that the Ni3S2@Ni(OH)2/3DGN exhibits high specific capacitance (1277 F g−1 at 2 mV s−1 and 1037.5 F g−1 at 5.1 A g−1) and areal capacitance (4.7 F cm−2 at 2 mV s−1 and 3.85 F cm−2 at 19.1 mA cm−2) with good cycling performance (99.1% capacitance retention after 2000 cycles).

Synthesis of Free‐Standing Metal Sulfide Nanoarrays via Anion Exchange Reaction and Their Electrochemical Energy Storage Application

Xinhui Xia; Changrong Zhu; Jingshan Luo; Zhiyuan Zeng; Cao Guan; Chin Fan Ng; Hua Zhang; Hong Jin Fan

Metal sulfides are an emerging class of high-performance electrode materials for solar cells and electrochemical energy storage devices. Here, a facile and powerful method based on anion exchange reactions is reported to achieve metal sulfide nanoarrays through a topotactical transformation from their metal oxide and hydroxide preforms. Demonstrations are made to CoS and NiS nanowires, nanowalls, and core-branch nanotrees on carbon cloth and nickel foam substrates. The sulfide nanoarrays exhibit superior redox reactivity for electrochemical energy storage. The self-supported CoS nanowire arrays are tested as the pseudo-capacitor cathode, which demonstrate enhanced high-rate specific capacities and better cycle life as compared to the powder counterparts. The outstanding electrochemical properties of the sulfide nanoarrays are a consequence of the preservation of the nanoarray architecture and rigid connection with the current collector after the anion exchange reactions.
