Phanoceroides Hinton, 1939: description of new species, morphology of larvae, and revised taxonomic position of the genus (Coleoptera: Elmidae) based on molecular evidence.

The monotypic genus Phanoceroides was initially classified within the subfamily Elminae, based solely on the distribution and type of pubescence on the body surface. Although a close relationship with Larainae was suggested (Hinton 1939, Maier 2013), its taxonomic position and phylogeny remained unresolved. Based on newly collected material, we describe here P. fernandesi sp. n. and document morphological characters and differences of adults and larvae of P. aquaticus Hinton, 1939 and P. fernandesi sp. n. To clarify the taxonomic position of Phanoceroides within Elmidae, we used molecular data (cox1 and mtDNA). The results support position of the genus within the subfamily Larainae with Hypsilara Maier & Spangler, 2011 as a close relative.

Alpine lakes and ponds – a promising source of high genetic diversity in metapopulations of aquatic insects

Abstract Alpine lakes and ponds are unique and vulnerable aquatic habitats inhabited by specific species assemblages. In contrast to alpine streams, the genetic diversity and population structure of the organisms found in alpine standing waters are almost completely unknown. Here we present a population genetic study of a macroinvertebrate species from alpine lakes, the diving beetle Agabus bipustulatus (Linnaeus, 1767). We used partial cytochrome b (Cyt b) mtDNA gene of 560 specimens from 43 lakes and ponds distributed across 20 mountain valleys of the Tatra Mountains (Western Carpathians) and their foothills. The aims of this study were to provide detailed genetic metapopulation analysis of A. bipustulatus within a geographically small mountain system, to explore the role of ridges in isolating lake populations, and to test for the applicability of Cyt b in insect population genetic studies. We detected high genetic variability (42 haplotypes), comparable to many large spatial scale studies. There was a star-shaped genetic structure with few dominant haplotypes, which confirmed recent origin, rapid expansion of metapopulation, and multiple colonization of the Tatra Mountain region by A. bipustulatus. The populations within the mountain system differed from each other, suggesting that the Tatra Mountain lakes and ponds were colonized through multiple colonization events, and also that colonization of the region and evolution of metapopulations are to a certain extent influenced by ridge barriers.

Discrimination between four Simocephalus species from Slovakia using a PCR-RFLP technique

Planktonic crustaceans are traditionally identified based on morphological and morphometric characters. However, such characters may be hardly distinguishable and often overlap between species. A probability of misidentification is thus relatively high. Molecular techniques may increase the accuracy of identification if appropriate markers are used. Aim of our work was to develop a simple molecular procedure enabling discrimination between four species of Simocephalus occurring in Europe. PCR-RFLP technique proved to be suitable for such discrimination. Within the 709 bp fragment of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene we found unique combinations of restriction sites of the BbsI and SacI enzymes for Simocephalus vetulus, S. exspinosus, S. serrulatus and S. congener. PCR products of samples from several locations in Slovakia were digested with the two enzymes and electrophoresed on an agarose gel. The restriction patterns were clearly visible and easily distinguishable. This method is applicable for identifying the four species in any life-stage. Considering its simplicity and cost-effectiveness it can be widely used as a diagnostic tool for discriminating between Simocephalus species with overlapping morphologic characters.

Two new Larainae species from Guayana region, Venezuela (Coleoptera: Elmidae)

Two new species of the subfamily Larainae (Insecta: Coleoptera: Elmidae), Hexanchorus angeli n. sp. and Hypsilara autanai n. sp., are described from Guyana region in Venezuela. We provide habitus photographs, detail drawings of both male and female genitalia, and description of morphological features important for discrimination of the new species. Molecular differences within genera were measured using 816bp fragment of mtDNA gene for cytochrome oxidase c subunit I. Sequence divergences among species are discussed.

Catchment land use as a predictor of the macroinvertebrate community changes between inlet and outlet of small water dams

Changes in land use practices have affected the integrity and the quality of stream water worldwide. Effective catchment management, in terms of land use alteration, depends on our ability to quantify ecologically significant changes and to discriminate among varying levels of impact. In this study, we assessed the structural and functional changes upstream and downstream of eight small water reservoirs in western Slovakia and the relationship between these changes and shifts in physicochemical parameters as a consequence of stream damming and catchment land use. Dams were categorized into two groups, the first with both inlet and outlet situated in deforested and agricultural landscape and the second with inlet flowing through natural and forested landscape, while outlet is situated in deforested and urban region. Using a “between-groups” principal components analysis and a “between-groups” fuzzy principal components analysis, we found significant differences in structural and functional composition of macroinvertebrate communities between inlets with forested catchment and outlets flowing through agricultural, urban landscape. The structural dissimilarity is best explained by the physicochemical and biological characteristics of the aquatic environment, while functional variation of communities is best explained by land use of an area surrounding the stream. The distance in structural and functional community composition between inlet and outlet was linked with difference in environmental conditions between these habitats. The change of structural community composition significantly reflected shift in the water temperature and phosphorus concentration, while the change of functional community composition was determined by change of nutrient concentrations (e.g., PO4, NO3, NH4) and pH.

Benthic macroinvertebrates along the Czech part of the Labe and lower section of the Vltava rivers from 1996-2005, with a particular focus on rare and alien species

In the Czech part of the Labe River and the lower part of the Vltava River, we examined if the benthic macroinvertebrate composition changed from 1996 to 2005 due to expected improvements in water quality resulting from socioeconomic changes in the Czech Republic since the 1990s. Special attention was given to rare and alien species. The four biological metrics used (Number of taxa, BMWP, Number of sensitive taxa, and Number of EPT taxa) demonstrated that there was indeed an improvement in water quality as well as a slight improvement of the Labe microhabitats during the investigated period. An increasing Number of taxa over time was observed at most sites. Two main concurrent ecological processes are recently in progress in the Labe: a recovery of native species and an expansion of alien species, some of which are considered invasive. The caddisfly Setodes punctatus and the beetle Pomatinus substriatus, considered as regionally extinct in the Czech Republic until 2005, were rediscovered during our investigations. Findings of the crustacean Hemimysis anomala (invasive) and the chironomids Stenochironomus sp. and Lipiniella sp. were the first records of these taxa in the Czech Republic.
