“Packaging logistics”: promoting sustainable efficiency in supply chains

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the aspects of internal and external transformation that take place in each company along the supply chain when a “sustainable packaging logistics” approach is implemented. Before this can be achieved, it is necessary to identify and characterise the principal cornerstones and stages associated with this implementation. Design/methodology/approach – In the paper the combination of “case study” and “action research” techniques have been chosen. It has been analysed the implementation of “sustainable packaging logistics” in the supply chain of Mercadona (one of the largest retailers in Spain), paying special attention to the implementation and evolution in one of its main food suppliers. Drivers and Stages in “Packaging Logistics”: An Analysis in the Food Sector

Packaging design stands out as one of the elements that eases a sustainable and efficient supply chain management. This paper sets out to define and characterize both the drivers and the evolutionary stages for implementing “packaging logistics”, through a “case study” analysis of eight Spanish food manufacturers. Likewise, one example of packaging improvement in one of these companies is supplied for illustrating the potential of its implementation.

Strategic Packaging Logistics: A Case Study from a Supply Chain Perspective

Few companies give importance to the impact of an appropriate packaging design on the implementation of logistic efficiency and sustainability strategies in the supply chain. Thus, this paper sets out to illustrate how a strategic view of this design (“Strategic Packaging Logistics”) makes it possible to obtain competitive advantages throughout the companies in the supply chain. To achieve this, not only the conceptual field of this new concept is developed, but also in its application, analysing a Spanish distribution company.

In this paper, the potential of “packaging logistics” for improving efficiency and sustainability in the supply chain is presented from an applied point of view.
