Young swiftlets are not able to build their own nest as it should. This led to an odd form that reduced its commercial values. The role of Swiftlets template nest is to guide the young swiftlet to build a typical form that will increase its commercial values. The current nest template used is made of plastic, silicone and rubber. By using ceramic materials as a nest template, it will bring the swiftlets close to their habitat which is limestone cave and thus make the population growth faster. The conceptual framework on how to study this problem was proposed. The framework will be a major guideline in producing high quality nest resulting from stoneware body nest template.

Recently, the Walet industry used artificial template nest which is made of plastic. It happens to be a new production method to increase the production of swiftlets’ nest. Unfortunately, those materials gave negative effect to the nest. Plastic materials can irritate the respiratory system, aggravate asthma and lung diseases, cause permanent lung damage, and affect the immune system. Because of that, natural resources based on the composition of ceramic materials such as stoneware incorporated with limestone (calcium carbonate) will be used to substitute these artificial materials. The objective of this research is to get the appropriate stoneware composition based on its physical properties such as shrinkage, strength, and water absorption. In laboratory test, stoneware was divided into five groups which were differentiated by the firing temperature: 700, 800, 900, 1,000, and 1,200 °C. All test pieces were prepared as a test bar using a press mould technique due to the production application suggested. The physical reaction shows a significant result where the strength and water absorption of the stoneware were reduced due to the increasing firing temperature. The production flow does not show any defect, crack, or break while drying or firing was implemented. Those results became a major guideline in producing a new artificial nest based on natural material from stoneware body. These results will be derived into the actual design of Walet nest template.

Raku refers to a low-temperature firing technique which originated from Japan and is admired internationally nowadays for its simple, spontaneous, yet decorative effects through the firing itself or its glaze composition. The problem statement would be from raku firing; it is somehow rather difficult to obtain an identical effect through the same firing along with the same glaze composition; hence, ceramic material tends to crack due to rapid heating and cooling of the fired ware. Furthermore, the after effects of raku firing are often towards a darker shade as brighter shades are infrequently obtained. One of the objectives of this research is to control all aspects of the firing beginning with the timing and ending with an evenly distributed circulation of heat. Another aspect is to overcome the crack defects for the ceramic material by obtaining a glaze composition that will produce a brighter shade effect from raku firing. In this work, a defect-free ceramic product with the identical glaze effect will be produced through a single raku firing.

Raku kiln has a variety of design since it can be constructed manually using a material that can withstand high temperature. This particular firing proposes a different method of applying the combustible material to the fired product which takes place inside the kiln rather than outside where the fired products are maintained at a standstill position throughout the whole firing process. Therefore the problem of statement would be the kiln’s characteristics to resist post-firing reduction particularly during the insertion of combustible material into the kiln. This experimentation was conducted to test on a fibre wall raku kiln’s capability to perform reduction within the kiln in order to achieve a standardized bronze colour effect of the glaze as a more economic way. In this research, the fibre wall raku kiln was tested to identify its capability to assist with reduction within the kiln itself.

Paper clay has been introduced since the last 20 years and was revolted by the European countries. The innovation of paper clay is very crucial to both ceramic artists and researchers. Due to this matter, the development of paper clay is progressive until today. In the realm of ceramic art design study, paper clay is mostly used in ceramic studio and has widely been utilized in sculptures. The combination of paper and clay enhances the level of porosity, nevertheless reducing the overall body weight due to the extension of raw material usage loss [1]. Although paper clay has been used widely in ceramic sculpture and craft, the existence of a number of materials used is very minor. Appropriate study in conducting research and development on the paper clay composition will enable ceramic artist, academician and university students to embark a new technology on developing artwork using ceramic clay. Conventional technique of building a large-scale sculpture often relates to heavy lifting problems. There will be small room of possibility in logistic manner which consequence difficulties of moving the artwork from one place to another. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the suitable parameter of producing paper clay that is lighter than the ordinary clay thus having the potential strength capable of holding its body structure in making large-scale sculpture. Hence, the paper clay will be of commercial value added to existing ceramic material, which enhances ceramic crafts and studio technology. By using an experimental method, the author will identify the suitable parameter for producing paper clay.

Clay is the main material in ceramic manufacturing and is an integral raw material for some refractories. The specialty of character in clay body, the entire world made it an important commodity. Ceramic manufacturing is one of the largest industries in Malaysia. This is related to the amount of ceramic raw materials itself that supports the development of the industry. Moreover, the contribution of artist and researcher is one of the factors of this improvement. The development of clay was enhanced by ceramic production whether by large- or small-scale industries. Through appropriate study in conducting research and development on clay will enable ceramic artist, academician, and university students to embark new sources of clay for ceramic production. Sabak Bernam is one of the areas that is currently active in making ceramic craft. There have abundant sources of materials at their area but has not been studied the usage and potential of the clay for ceramics. The objective of this research is to study the potential of clay at Sabak Bernam for craft production. The methodology of this research is a comparison study between clay at Sabak Bernam and Sayong clay. It started with collecting materials in a specific area in Sabak Bernam. Through appropriate study on laboratory experiment will determined the physical characteristic of clay. Therefore, clay study will through the ceramic fabricating which is press mold technique is to determine the performance of the clay. A result of the development of clay at Sabak Bernam will enhance the ceramic craft production specifically in that area. Hence, the Sabak Bernam clay will be commercial such as Sayong clay in Malaysia.

The conventional way of blackening Labu Sayong, traditionally or modern style, was by taking out pots from the firing chamber piece by piece after firing reached the maturing temperature of 900 °C. During the process, there is potential for standardizing the blackening effect of the Labu Sayong through the smoke firing process. However, there are slight chances of obtaining an even blackish effect from the firing reduction process. Through this experiment, it is expected to achieve a standardization effect from a smoke firing technique for the blackening of Labu Sayong through a single firing.

Recently the supply and demand for edible bird nests (EBN) in Malaysia was phenomenal. It was believed that the content of the nest is very nutritious. It was identified that the nest was produced by a swiftlet species, Aerodramus Fuciphagus. In Malaysia, the swiftlet is called the Walet and the EBN was built entirely from threads of its saliva; normally it was collected for the medicine that can cure some diseases. The EBN can only be found in the vicinity of the cave wall that been made up naturally of calcium carbonate. At present, a Walet house was used to lure the birds from surrounding areas to come in and build a nest. Thus a consistent production of the nest was introduced and established the modern supply and demand. However, young swiftlets are not able to build the nest as they should. This led to an odd form that reduced its commercial values. Therefore, the swiftlet scaffolding nest was introduced as a guide form to the young swiftlet to build a typical form that would increase its commercial values. In this study, the design of the natural scaffolding nest was explored and it was determined that the scaffolding had to be in the concave form for the ease of the swiftlet’s saliva deposition. Finally, the hook was redesigned in order to adapt to the ceramic material’s brittleness. The designed hook and installation of the stoneware scaffolding nest in the Walet house was successful, easy and fast. The finding of this stoneware scaffolding nest will enhance production of the Walet nest hence it will increase the income of the entrepreneur.
