This article is based on previous studies using triangulation of methods for investigating if violence is obstructing the rights of the elderly. A questionnaire with open and closed questions was applied to a convenience sample of 72 elderly (60 or more years of age) of both sexes. Twenty-two key-informants (elderly people, community leaders and representatives of public institutions) were interviewed. In this survey we investigate the net for protection to the elderly of the city of Rio de Janeiro (institutions, assistance flow, integration, denunciations and measures taken). We analyzed 763 records of occurrences of the Police Department for the Aged and 135 of the NEAPI (Nucleus for Special Assistance for the Aged), taken care of in 2004. We emphasize domestic violence committed by close relatives and point to the need of structuring the formal net through increasing the number of institutions for protection to the aged, professional qualification, communication and integration among the agencies composing the net. We also consider important stimulating the informal nets for support and protection to the elderly.

This article identifies the conceptions and suggestions of professors of medicine and nursing courses about the insertion of this subject in the formation of their students. An exploratory research was carried out using a questionnaire applied to coordinators of disciplines in such courses at public and private universities in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Cuiabá. Many of them recognizes violence as a health problem, although 40.7% of medicine professors and 71.1% of nursing professors of the two cities discusses this subject in their classes. The medicine professors suggests the insertion of the violence subject in their students formation with visits to institutions, meeting groups with people in violence situations and interviews with experienced professionals of the area. The nursing professors prefer resources such as films and videos, seminaries and conferences. Gaps were also identified in the students and professors formation, which do not feel able to discuss this thematic. It is indicated that a renovation in the curriculum is urgently necessary.

Perceptions and practices of Angolan health care professionals concerning intimate partner violence against women

Edna de Fátima Gonçalves Alves do Nascimento; Adalgisa Peixoto Ribeiro; Edinilsa Ramos de Souza

This was a qualitative exploratory study with the objective of identifying perceptions and practices among health professionals in Angola concerning intimate partner violence against women. Semi-structured interviews were held with a senior health administrator, head nurses, medical directors, psychologists, and nurse technicians in three national hospitals in the capital city of Luanda. The perceptions of Angolan health professionals towards violence against women are marked by the cultural construction of woman’s social role in the family and the belief in male superiority and female weakness. Despite their familiarity with the types of violence and the consequences for physical and mental health, the health professionals’ practices in providing care for women in situations of violence focus on the treatment of physical injuries, overlooking the subjectivity and complexity of these situations. Recent inclusion of the issue in public policies is reflected in health professionals’ practices and raises challenges for the health sector in caring for women in situations of violence.

The scope of this article is to chart, define and qualify the healthcare provided by the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) and outsourced services to elderly people in situations of violence in Rio de Janeiro, based on major policies aimed at this group. This is an exploratory study that triangulated quantitative and qualitative methods. The introduction and implementation of policies is differentiated between the units: they are more thoroughly implemented at the pre-hospital and hospital level and less at rehabilitation level. The challenges involve the professionals ability to identify, attend and report cases of violence; to include the topic in care of the elderly; to give visibility to the specific requirements for elderly women; to instruct and orient families about care, creating strategies to redeem the bonds of affection; to monitor the changes that lead to functional disability and enhance the quality of life of the elderly.

Percepção do risco entre policiais civis de diferentes territórios do Estado do Rio de Janeiro

Patrícia Constantino; Adalgisa Peixoto Ribeiro; Bruna Soares Chaves Correia

The purpose of this work is to describe the structure and characterize the services offered for rehabilitation of elder people, victims of accidents and violence, based on the main public policies of health for this population in Brazil. Following the principles of the triangulation method, a 27 question questionnaire was applied to 19 rehabilitation services (five in Manaus, seven in Recife, two in Brasilia, two in Rio de Janeiro and three in Curitiba) about structure and organization of the service besides data registration. Managers and health professionals were interviewed about the flow, characterization and specificities of the service to elder people, protection chains, services evaluation and suggestions. Services in Manaus and Brasilia are better prepared to attend elder victims of accidents and violence. The services in Brasilia surpass the specific issues of elderly care. The rehabilitation units in Recife are more unprepared, especially regarding laboratorial support, qualification of professionals to identify and attend the cases of violence, registration and analysis of data. It is concluded that the rehabilitation service presents great fragility on the implantation of public policies and in insertion of the violence theme.

The aim of this article is to describe the public service of Manaus to elderly, either victims of accidents or violence, on three levels of service (32 pre-hospital, 5 hospital and 5 rehabilitation). It is a descriptive study with a quantitative and qualitative approach, where 42 health units were investigated. The results reveal that the emergency services department presents a better physical structure. The organization concerning these matters is still incipient in Manaus. It was detected scarcity in the number of hospital beds and vacancies in the intensive care unit to offer the continuity of the treatment. Theres a need for professional qualifications and medical specialties to attend elderly admitted due to injury. Very little has been done in the prevention area. Data entry and notification appear as one of the weakest points on the three levels of attention. The most critical point is related to hospitalization, being this level of attention largely mentioned by managers and health professionals as in great need for re-structuring.

Condições de saúde dos presos do estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

Maria Cecília de Souza Minayo; Adalgisa Peixoto Ribeiro

We present the results of a quantitative and qualitative study on the living conditions and health of prisoners in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The goal was to produce strategic information to support the action of public officials who work in prisons. The results show that prisoners are young (average age: 30 years), poor, mostly black and brown (70.5%), have little education (only 1.5% of them have a higher education), and have been in prison for less than four years. Among the problems that indirectly affect their health, we emphasize: overcrowding (1.39 prisoners per one vacancy), idleness (only 4.4% of them work), lack of perspective, violence and relationships of conflict. The most common physical health problems include: musculoskeletal problems, such as pain in the neck, back, and spine (76.7%), joint dislocation (28.2%), bursitis (22.9%), sciatica (22, 1%), arthritis (15.9%), bone fracture (15.3%), problems with bone and cartilage (12.5%), and muscle and tendon injuries (15.7%); respiratory problems, such as sinusitis (55.6%), allergic rhinitis (47%), chronic bronchitis (15.6%), tuberculosis (4.7%) and others (11.9%); and skin diseases. Despite legal requirements that include prison health care among the Universal Health System’s (SUS) obligations, services are scarce and inefficient and a major cause of inmate dissatisfaction. We present the results of a quantitative and qualitative study on the living conditions and health of prisoners in the state of Rio de Janeiro. This cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the cases of falls in urgent and emergency care services of 24 Brazilian capitals and the Federal District participating in the 2014 VIVA Survey. We sought to describe the epidemiological profile of victims, characterizing the event and the severity of injuries it caused and to perform an association study. We calculated the simple and relative frequencies of variables and performed multivariate logistic regression analysis for complex sample data in order to verify associations between falls and selected variables. Fall victims profile results show a predominance of males, age groups 0-9years and 20-39 years and brown skin. Outcomes show that 56% fell from own height, public road was the most frequent place of falls and 92.7% of people receiving care for falls suffered some kind of injury, of which most common were bruises, sprain and strains, followed by cut/laceration. In the final model, we were able to associate fall with gender, age, education, disability and place of the event. The likelihood of falls at school is 14% higher than at home, but falls in recreation areas, public roads and other places are less likely than at home.
