The understanding of family relationships is related to the development of valid and reliable psychological instruments. In this way, the present study intended to evaluate some validity properties of the Perception of Family Support Inventory (PFSI) and Familiogram (FG). Both instruments were answered by 260 college students of two Brazilian cities. The total sample was composed by people of both genders, aged between 18 and 30 years old (Mean=22.54, SD=3.69). The results indicated that Emotional-Consistent and Family Adaptation factors moderately correlated with Affection and Conflict constructs. On the other hand, Autonomy has low correlations with FG factors. Implications of those results for the validity of PSFI and FG are discussed.

The present study aimed to find evidence of validity based on the relationship with variables of the Depression Scale-EDEP with the General Health Questionnaire-GHQ-60, controlling for gender, age, socio-economic status, and history of mental illness in the family. A total of 98 students with a mean age of 25.8 years (SD = 7.72) were studied. Moderate correlations between instruments were found, indicating that the presence of common mental disorders is related to increased depressive symptoms. Furthermore, sex, age, social class and economic history of mental illness in the family did not differentiate the scores of general health and depressive symptoms.

This study’s objective was to analyze the diagnostic capabilities of a depression screening scale. For that, this scale was administered along with two diagnostic instruments, namely, the structured clinical interview from the DSM-IV (SCID-CV) and the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-D), which are considered to be the gold standard for diagnosing depressive disorders. Participants were 22 subjects diagnosed by psychiatrists with Major Depressive Disorder. The EBADEP-A correctly identified cases of depression, showing a high correlation with the HAM-D, which indicates the scale correctly captures most depressive symptoms, even though it was initially used as a depression-screening tool.

Background: Several studies have reported a strong relationship between distorted thoughts and Major Depressive Disorder, but there is a lack of tests that match these needs. Objectives: to investigate the psychometric proprieties of Depression Thoughts Scale – EPD with depressive symptoms scales. Method: a total of 367 subjects divided into non-depressed and depressed groups were assessed. The first group contained 338 (92.1%) subjects classified as having no reported diagnosis of depression, while the remaining subjects (n=29) comprised the second group containing subjects with clinically and SCID-confirmed diagnosis of depression. Data collection was performed by applying instruments assessing depressive symptoms including the Baptista Depression Scale -EBADEP-A and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression -HAM-D. Data was collected individually in the clinical group and collectively in the non-clinical group. Results: the data indicated that the EPD had moderate correlation with the HAMD (p= 0.001) and strong with EBADEP A (p=0.001), where depressives exhibited a greater number of distorted thoughts. Conclusion: the EPD proved a potentially useful tool for helping clinicians identify depressive thoughts, functioning as a complement to access specifically the cognitive factors related with depression.

Thoughts are considered by Cognitive Therapy as an essential part for depression treatment and consider that the negative perception of yourself, the others and future interfere directly in their cognitive vulnerability. This way, the present study aims to present the item construction process, content evaluation and factor analysis of the Depressive Thoughts Scale EPD, based on cognitive triad. Participated of the study 639 subjects with and without depression diagnosis, aged 18 to 50 of both sexes. Applications were performed individually for those with confirmed diagnostic of depression and collectively for others. It was found that EPD items were able to differentiate the groups, indicating those diagnosed with depression as those with higher depression thoughts. After factor analysis, scale was reduced to 34 items, with five interpretable factors and not randomized, named as Low self esteem, Interpersonal relationship, Self appreciation, Negative expectations and Disarrangement social and dissatisfaction. The reability indices pointed the need for further studies in order to investigate the scale configuration. These results indicate adequate psychometric properties for the scale, and serve the purpose of arousing further studies to find evidence of validity and reliability.
