A Survey on Occupational Safety and Health Awareness Among School Teachers in Kelantan, Malaysia

Nowadays, more accident cases reported in school cause not only injuries, but also deaths. This indicates that the importance of safety and health measures in school should be exposed not only to students but most importantly to teachers who will be guiding and providing safety and health culture in school. This paper is based on the study that was motivated by the increasing reports of accidents in school. The objective of the study was to measure the understanding regarding safety and health among school teachers in Kelantan by distributing questionnaires consist of ten District Education Offices (PPD) in Kelantan, Malaysia. The results show that most of the respondents understand about safety and health matters with the importance of implementing safety and health in school. In conclusion, further study on workplace assessment need to be conducted at school to identify the implementation of safety and health among school community.

Risk assessment in infrastructure in educational institution: A study in Malaysia

This particular study was conducted to assess the hazard exposure in education institution and to highlight the possible risk level available. The assessment utilised is Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Control (HIRARC). There was a 2008s form in order to determine the risk level of the hazard. There were over 111 of education institutions were selected around Malaysia to perform this assessment. Area chosen for each institution was office, playing field, canteen, classroom, toilet and drainage. By referring HIRARC Guideline 2008, the determination of risk rank is measure based on the formula likelihood multiply severity and the rank need to refer from risk matrix standard. There are several hazard have be found and shows the high, medium and low of risk level. The higher level of risk was discussed in the study which is hazard found in playing field and hazard in office. There several hazard that need to be control by education management to avoid increase of case accident in Education Sector, Malaysia. As conclusion, the exposure hazard among the staff and educators is high and further action and control are needed. Further study need to explore the best recommendation for control measure of the hazard exposed by education institution.

Safety and health practice among laboratory staff in Malaysian education sector

Safety is the most important issue in industrial sector such as construction and manufacturing. Recently, the increasing number of accident cases reported involving school environment shows the important of safety issues in education sector. Safety awareness among staff in this sector is crucial in order to find out the method to prevent the accident occurred in future. This study was conducted to analyze the knowledge of laboratory staff in term of safety and health practice in laboratory. Survey questionnaires were distributing among 255 of staff laboratory from ten District Education Offices in Kelantan. Descriptive analysis shows that the understanding of safety and health practice are low while doing some job activities in laboratory. Furthermore, some of the staff also did not implemented safety practice that may contribute to unplanned event occur in laboratory. Suggestion that the staff at laboratory need to undergo on Occupational Safety and Health training to maintain and create safe environment in workplaces.
