Based on the premise that “space matters,” the present study is intended as a contribution to the analytic efforts focused on investigating the impact of segregation, understood here as how the concentration in space of similar socioeconomic strata affects the ability of individuals and families to respond to the numerous problems and risks involved in large urban areas. More specifically, the article consists of an investigation into whether, for the case of an emerging metropolitan region in Brazil (Campinas, in the State of Sao Paulo), there are indications of the effect of segregation on the various characteristics of the inclusion of individuals in the labor market. Data from the Federal Demographic Census of 2000 show how unemployment, formality of labor, and the social protection of the economically active population are influenced both by the sociodemographic characteristics, including migratory status and condition of intraurban mobility (pendularity), and by the population’s physical location in the region. As a spatial variable related to segregation, a measure is proposed on Moran’s Local rate, which seeks to identify homogeneous areas in terms of the socioeconomic composition of their inhabitants. Although the results obtained are not conclusive, they do suggest the importance of location on way individuals are absorbed by the labor market. This finding corroborates several of the theoretical propositions taken into account in this study

The main goal of this paper is to analyze the migration in the north region of Brazil, mainly characterized by the presence of the Amazon. International migrants are analyzed, in particular the cross-border ones, as well as Brazilian migrants. The idea is to observe the real impact of these migrants in the destination place in the Amazon and the role of border towns in this process. Are these international migrants just passing through the border cities or the mentioned cities have enough attractives in order to some of the migrants stay in them? Were they ready to receive a substantial volume of migrants? These migrants come directly from their countries or have prior experience in other Brazilian places? To clarify this, data from demographic census of 2010 and Population Enumerate of 2007 are used to analyze the characteristics of migrants according to their origin, as well as their chosen place of destination. Based on the analysis of this paper, we can see that the profile of the migrants according to their origin is different, and also the place of destination, possibly due to social networks, which play an important role in this process of attraction of migrants in certain areas.

The main objective of this work is to provide an assessment of international migration into the Brazilian Legal Amazonia, a little explored area in scientific papers dealing with population studies, with a particular emphasis on migrants from the major emitters of people for this region, with borders with the Amazonia, especially Peru and Bolivia. According to Census data, from 2010, of the nearly 30,000 foreign immigrants into the Legal Amazonia for that year, 31% were from these two countries. The idea is to analyze these migrants, comparing data regarding age, education and income levels, gender, occupation at the destination, their standard of location, municipalities of destination and the place of residence inside the municipality, in terms of census tracts, in a proxy of spatial segregation. The place of origin will also be considered, with the migrants that came directly from their countries or had more migratory experience inside Brazil before arrive at the municipality (internal migration), and the time of residence. The idea is to analyze better the recent migration, especially those who arrived in the 2005-2010 period. The data show that in terms of their origins, the characteristics of the migrants are quite different. Therefore, data from both the 2010 Census and the 2007 Population Count are used for the current analysis, including census shapefiles for the mapping.
