The new 125 kW engine from Volkswagen in the Golf GT represents a milestone in the development of direct-injection spark-ignition engines. Its performance far surpasses that of conventional engines with the same capacity while at the same time offering substantially improved fuel economy. This result has been achieved by a combination of downsizing, direct fuel injection and double supercharging. While part 1 described the engine design, part 2 deals with the thermodynamics.

Der TSI-Motor mit 90 kW

Die Basis des 90-kW-TSI-Motors bildet der von Volkswagen eingefuhrte 1,4-l-TSI-Motor mit 125 kW und 103 kW mit Doppelaufladung, der bereits mehrfach ausgezeichnet worden ist — unter anderem mit dem Paul-Pietsch Preis, Best New Engine 2006 in der Klasse 1,0 bis 1,4 l sowie Best of What’s New von Popular Science 2005. So steht der 1,4-l-90-kW-Motor mit Einfachaufladung fur die konsequente Weiterentwicklung von turboaufgeladenen Downsizing-Konzepten.

The TSI engine with 90 kW

The 90 kW TSI is based on the 125 kW and 103 kW 1.4 l TSI engines with twin charging, which were successfully introduced by Volkswagen and have received numerous awards including the “Paul Pietsch Prize”, “Best New Engine, 2006” in the 1.0 l to 1.4 l class and “Best of Whats New from Popular Science, 2005“. Thus the 1.4 l 90 kW engine with single-stage charging stands for the rigorous further development of turbocharged downsizing designs.
