Piperaceae do Parque Nacional do Viruá, Caracaraí, Roraima, Brasil

Aline Melo; Elsie Franklin Guimarães; Marccus Alves

Piperaceae comprises five genera, approximately 3.600 species with a pantropical distribution, and in Brazil this family is represented by about 450 taxa. Therefore, the aim of this research was do the taxonomic treatment of species that occur in Parque Nacional do Virua, state of Roraima. Field trips were conducted between September 2011 and August 2012, and vouchers from herbaria were also analyzed. We found 16 taxa, 12 of the genus Piper L. and four of Peperomia Ruiz & Pav. Eleven taxa are new records for the state, and one is a new record for Brazil. Most species were collected in the lowlands forests, but some were found in floodplain forests.

Synopsis of the genus Peperomia Ruiz & Pav. (Piperaceae) in Roraima State, Brazil

Aline Melo; Elsie Franklin Guimarães; Marccus Alves

Peperomia is the second most diverse genus of Piperaceae, with an estimated 1,600 species and a pantropical distribution. This work aims to present a taxonomic synopsis of the genus in the State of Roraima, in the extreme north of the Brazilian Amazon forest and belonging to the central-south portion of the Guayana Shield. Based on collecting expeditions and analysis of specimens in various herbaria, 23 taxa were recognized, with two new records for the State and one of them, a new record for Brazil. The taxa are differentiated mainly by phyllotaxis, shape and size of their leaves, in addition to habit and fruits. They have been found in areas of lowland, submontane, montane, tepui and floodplain (varzea) forests and mostly show a distribution restricted to the Neotropics. Some species in the state are presently known exclusively from Mount Roraima, and restricted to a few specimens.

Serra do Urubu, a biodiversity hot-spot for angiosperms in the northern Atlantic Forest (Pernambuco, Brazil)

Aline Melo; Bruno S. Amorim; Edlley Pessoa; Jefferson Rodrigues Maciel; Marccus Alves

A list of angiosperms from Serra do Urubu, a montane forest area in the state of Pernambuco, is here provided. Based on 14 botanical expeditions and material deposited in herbaria, 832 taxa belonging to 442 genera and 118 families have been recorded in this area, with about 90% of the taxa identified to species level. The richest families are Orchidaceae (86 spp.), Fabaceae (51 spp.) and Rubiaceae (42 spp.). Miconia and Solanum (14 spp. each), and Psychotria (13 spp.) are the richest genera. About 15% of the recorded species are endemic to the Atlantic Forest, and another 10% are disjunct between this area and the Amazon Rainforest. The results indicate that the Serra do Urubu is one of the richest areas in terms of number of species of the Atlantic Forest in the Northeast, and corroborates the Pernambuco Endemism Center.

Bruno S. Amorim; Jefferson Rodrigues Maciel; Aline Melo; Marccus Alves

Abstract The order Ericales in the Atlantic Forest remnants of Usina Sao Jose was partially published in the taxonomic treatment of Sapotaceae. Following the series of publications of Usina Sao Jose, in this paper the treatment of Ericales is updated with the families Lecythidaceae, Marcgraviaceae and Primulaceae. We recorded six genera and eight species for these families. Lecythidaceae is represented by three genera and four species, Marcgraviaceae by two genera and two species and Primulaceae by one genus and two species. For the genera Eschweilera and Myrsine we recorded two species each and for the other genera we recorded one species each. This paper has an identification key and descriptions for the species, ecological and taxonomic comments for genera and species. Key words: Ericales, Atlantic Forest, floristic, taxonomy, lowland.
