Abstract The present article proposes a mathematical decision support system model to measure the performance of incubated technology-based firms (TBFs) suppliers. The research was conducted based on three steps: (1) a literature review, in order to parameterise the research in relation to the theme; (2) the construction of a measuring system, based on the presumptions permeated by the analytic hierarchy process (AHP); and (3) the application of the system at three companies. The findings demonstrated the mathematical modelling developed is capable of providing satisfactory results to the reality of the sector studied, presenting the situation of the suppliers evaluated, independent of the nature of the indicated critical success factors (CSFs). Also, this tool supports companies by providing a strong foundation to organise the information regarding the service level delivered by each supplier, according to previous research on the theme.

This study aimed to conduct an assessment of the technical efficiency of Business Administration courses in Brazil, by means of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), a nonparametric technique introduced by Charnes, Cooper and Rhodes (1978). Were used as variables in the model the eight component indicators of the Preliminary Concept of Course (CPC) to evaluate 1229 courses of Business Administration based on the results of the National Examination of Performance Evaluation of Students (ENADE) of 2009, obtaining as result that only 1.2% of these can be considered efficient. After this measurement, a step of recommendations was made to propose goals for the inefficient courses, thus bringing to light that better results can achieved given the inputs already available for Business Administration courses.

In similar conditions of food handling and genetics, there are large differences in the final productivity of farms, resulting from inherent factors of the production system. This fact predisposes the need of studies on optimizing the rearing conditions of the farms, in order to verify the main limitations for the producers. Therefore, the present study aims to generate predictions of the swine productivity in the finishing phase, using variables related to their profiles and the production results achieved. 107 farmers belonging to a swine cooperative were considered in the study, located in 47 counties at the Taquari valley region, Brazil. Predictions were generated through the aid of neural networks, and the findings show that Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) can predict the productivity variables Feed Conversion, Mortality and Average Daily Gain for the proposed case.

From the growing trend of the services sector participation in the Brazilian economic scenario, the demand for studies on this subject seek to deepen the understanding about the behaviour of the aspects that influence the occurrence of such evolution. Following this sense, the present study aimed to propose a diagnostic model to measure the performance of innovation and competitiveness in the telecommunications service sector, providing resources to develop strategies, in order to turn the company capable of acting in a position according to direct and indirect main competitors, being development guided by five factors: service production, technology, human resources, finance and marketing. Once constructed the model, the implementation proved to be valid, presenting itself as a practical tool to support managers and consultants in the overall assessment of the company, allowing also to analyse its performance situation regarding to the development of competitive forms of positioning.

Alvaro Luiz Neuenfeldt Júnior; Julio Cezar Mairesse Siluk; Elpidio Oscar Benitez Nara

Recently, Brazilian companies have searched for ways to optimize the results of industrial processes. Studies by the Lean Institute Brasil (2012) indicate that the industries of Brazil, on average, require the most overtime for compliance with manufacturing operations. This is directly linked to the high amount of stocks between processes, waste handling and the storage of materials. Thus, this article aims to study the way in which the internal supply chain operates in a bus manufacturing company in Brazil. Specifically, purchased components are studied to find ways to obtain industrial gains, and a methodology called Making Materials Flow is used to correction the problems that are identified. In the end, missing items in the Assembly Line were reduced by 40%, the number of buses produced per day increased by approximately 37%.

Modeling to Relate Variables in the Context of Franchises in Brazil

Julio Cezar Mairesse Siluk; Alvaro Luiz Neuenfeldt Júnior

ABSTRACT The central objective of the research is to propose a model for the comparative study of the degree of relationship between the variables considered as most relevant in the context of franchises in Brazil. In terms of methodology, the research undertook a qualitative survey of the variables, which in a second phase provided a quantitative framework in order to fulfill the proposed objective, through concepts based on multicriteria methods, performance measurement systems, and linear correlation. Resulting from the practical implementation proposed for the General Food category, it was found that only two constants, denoted “Average Initial Investment” and “Financial Obligations,” are directly related to the base variable defined by “Gross Revenues.”

Alvaro Luiz Neuenfeldt Júnior; Julio Cezar Mairesse Siluk; Marlon Soliman; Elpidio Oscar Benitez Nara; Liane Mahlmann Kipper

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study the level of importance existing among the indicators that were previously defined for a Performance Measurement Systems (PMS) and are relative to franchises in Brazil, using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology, together with a series of tests, which are responsible by verifying the degree of reliability, robustness and stability of the parameters used and the results obtained. As a result, the author suggests that the diagnosing of the five delimited indicators have different relevance assigned to them. Design/methodology/approach – This paper reviews extant literatures in Franchise, PMS, Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM), in specific the theory about AHP. Findings – The authors found that it was possible justified, for both the relative and the evaluative method, that the I3 was the main point of the system and, as a consequence, be considered as priority when talking about sectorial development of franchises in Brazil. As for the other...

Marlon Soliman; Julio Cezar Mairesse Siluk; Alvaro Luiz Neuenfeldt Júnior; Frank Leonardo Casado; Sabine Ritter De Paris
