The living will is a relevant theme to be discussed from the sanitary and legal points of view and is also an important instrument to drive the assistance to terminally ill patients according to their final wills. We performed this exploratory and qualitative research to study the opinion of 36 resident doctors in Brazil public hospitals, regarding to the inclusion of the living will in medical practice. Data were collected in August, 2013. Our results stressed the relevance of living will for the autonomy of the terminally ill patient, providing the humanization of his treatment. This article shows the need of a law to rule the formal use of this directory in Brazil. It is also important to point out the necessity to broaden the discussions about the theme in Brazilian reality, in order to promote a larger comprehension of those physicians’ point of view when dealing with the last moments of their patients’ lives. The living will is a relevant theme to be discussed from the sanitary and legal points of view and is also an important instrument to drive the assistance to terminally ill patients according to their final wills. Objective: to assess the Peaceful End of Life Theory according to an assessment framework of nursing theories. Method: reflection developed through the investigation of the Peaceful End of Life Theory and its application in Palliative Care nursing practice, using the analysis and assessment framework proposed by Jacqueline Fawcett. The analysis involved an impartial and detailed investigation of the theory, including the scope, context and content of the theory; and the assessment was based on the criteria of significance, internal consistency, parsimony, testability, empirical adequacy and pragmatic adequacy. Results: what the scope is considered, this is considered a medium-range and predictive theory. Its context is based on Katharine Kocalba’s Comfort Theory. In the content, it presents defined, well-outlined and interrelated concepts. Its significance derives from its explicit definition of the concepts of the metaparadigm; its internal consistency from the definition it provides for each concept and its use of the concepts without contradiction. It is parsimonious because nurses can use it for care to end-of-life patients. Conclusion: the importance of the theory is highlighted, as well as its application in the activities of nurses focused on care to end-of-life individuals and their relatives, as it presents concepts and propositions in line with what Palliative Care proposes. DESCRIPTORS: Nursing. Terminally ill. Palliative care. Nursing theory. Assessment of theory. http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/0104-07072017002920017

The search was conducted in the Virtual Health Library and Portal Capes, considering only studies in Portuguese. The sample consisted of 17 articles. It was observed that from 2011 to 2012 is the period with the highest number of publications about the investigated issue. The majority of papers were published in journals in the area of computer science and the most common modality of publication was original article. It was found that scientific productions involving Electronic Health Record discussed about its importance and implementation in health services, as well as perceptions of health professionals about its utilization. The research evidenced the relevance of EHR in health services, emphasizing necessity for improved regulations of ethical and legal issues and creation of legal provision to concede judicial validity in Brazil.

This study aims to examine the family structure of patients in palliative home care in the light of the Calgary Family Assessment Model (CFAM). This is a qualitative research, conducted in the residences of patients enrolled in the Palliative Care Unit and Pain Treatment (PCUP) of a university hospital located in Recife/Pernambuco, Brazil, in the period from May to July 2014. The sample consisted of five patients enrolled in the PCUP and five family caregivers. Data collection was performed through an interviewing technique using two instruments: the genogram and eco-map. The empirical material was analyzed in the light of the Calgary Model of Family Assessment. The application of the Model demonstrated external family structure relationship with the non-existent neighborhood; support network in diverse health, with very strong relationship with the PCUP highlighting the link with nursing professional; weak relationship concerning Basic Health Unit and strong connection to the church. The obtained data suggest that each researched family has demands to be thought of as focus of nursing care and have faith as a resource for coping with the disease. It follows that the application of CFAM has highlighted the intra-family ties and the relations established with the support networks, signaling strategies to optimize patient care without a therapeutic possibility of cure and their family.

This study aims to analyze the bibliometric indicators on national and international scientific production on palliative care and spirituality in health field. The bibliometric research was conducted in the virtual library SciELO and the LILACS, PubMed and IBECS Databases. Papers available in full-length and published in the period of 2005-2014 were selected resulting in a sample of 50 publications, among which 24 are national and 26 international. The journal that published more frequently on the theme was the Journal of Palliative Medicine. Journals classified with Qualis A2 and B2 stood out. Most of the publications were produced by medical practitioners with master degree. There was a predominance of original papers with qualitative approach coming from educational and research institutions abroad. Results suggest a still incipient amount of publications on Palliative Care and Spirituality in the health area at national and international levels, which demonstrates the need for further studies on this subject.
