SUBDIVISION OF THE RELIEF IN MANOEL VIANA MUNICIPALLY - RS

Anderson Augusto Volpato Sccoti; Luís Eduardo de Souza Robaina; Romario Trentin

The Manoel Viana municipality is located in western Rio Grande do Sul, in Ibicui River Basin. The altitudes are among the range of 80 m and120 m above the sea level, corresponding to 46% of the total altitude, and 120 m and 180 m above the sea level, which has approximately 49% ofthe total. The lowest altitude is approximately 60 m and it is along the plain of the Ibicui river, and the highest altitude is approximately 240m,in the northeast region of Manoel Viana. The predominant declivity distance is less of 2%, with more than half the study area 56%, distributedat all altitudes, being characteristic of the plain reliefs, the broad interfluves and the tops of hills and hillock. The landforms can be classifiedas: ramps of valley bottom characterized by presenting a slope less than 2% occurring among the major drainages; forms of gently rolling hillswith slopes between 2% and 5% and wide lengths; forms of strongly wavy hills characterized by slopes between 5 and 15% that occur in thetransition area between two levels of dissection; isolated mounts characterized by amplitudes lower than 100m and steep slopes, associated withthe most resistant portions to erosion; and associated to mounts, forms of hills which are called sedimentary rocks from the formation of Guaraand Botucatu; the forms of mounts and hills associated to the strongly wavy hills, which characterize by slopes greater than 15%, occurring thetransition of the first to a second level of dissection.

This work presents a historical research of disasters/accidentscaused by mass moviments and flooding that occurred in Caxias do Sulbetween 1980 and 2007. The data were analyzed by the frequency, type anddistribution of events. The research results indicate that the massmovements occured predominantly during winter and the fast floodingmainly in the summer months. The districts affected have been identifiedand mapped, providing information that are the basis for advanced worksof zoning and management of risks.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE DELINEATION OF PAMPA AND ATLANTIC FOREST BIOMES IN SANTA MARIA, RS.

Carlos Alberto Löbler; Anderson Augusto Volpato Sccoti; Mauro Kumpfer Werlang

The Municipality of Santa Maria, RS is located in a transition zone between the Pampa biome and the Atlantic Forest biome. This paper aims to contribute to the delineation of these biomes cartographically. For this information from different sources and scales were used. The information was compiled in the ArcGIS environment where a map of vegetation cover was generated. A cartographic synthesis containing the delimitation of biomes was obtained by superimposing the maps of vegetation cover and map containing elevation of 100 meters. The result showed four classes: occurrence of field 100 m above the level; occurrence of field below the elevation 100 m; occurrence of forest above 100 m elevation, occurrence of forest below 100m elevation. It is concluded that the occurrence of the field below the elevation 100 m characterizes the Pampa biome, and the occurrence of forest above 100 m elevation, defines the Atlantic Forest biome. However, the occurrence of field 100 m above the elevation as well as the occurrence of forest below 100 m elevation, characterized enclaves of these biomes.

In the west and southwest regions of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) there are extensive areas with fragile soils developed from sandy sediments of the continental Mesozoic Parana Basin. Inappropriate land use has accelerated the process of sandy desertification in these areas. In this case, the knowledge of soils is critical for the choice of appropriate management systems to regain sustainability. The objectives of this study were to understand the evolution and describe the relationships, in terms of origin, between the rock and its respective pedological cover by studying profiles developed from sandstones of the Guara Formation in RS. Soil chemical, physical, mineralogical, and morphological analyses were carried out with samples of two Dystrudept and one Rhodudult profile. There was evidence of external addition of material to the studied profiles, mainly of ilmenite, resulting from the alteration of areas with basic volcanic rocks in the surroundings. The inclusion of allochthonous material in the soil profiles was responsible for a pedogenesis leading to B horizons with higher clay contents, a feature of Ultisols and Cambisols. The data suggest the identification and interpretation of a sixth pedogenetic component, defined as the geological context of the surroundings.

Evidences of allochtonous pedogenesis on sandstones in the Southwestern region of Rio Grande do Sul

Edgardo Ramos Medeiros; Fabrício de Araújo Pedron; Anderson Augusto Volpato Sccoti

The southwestern region of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) is characterized by large portions of sandy soils that have high environmental vulnerability, due to their low fertility and high susceptibility to erosion. Some of these soils have increased clay, suggesting allochtonous pedogenesis. In this case, the aims of this study were to determine evidence of allochtonous pedogenesis on sandstones Botucatu Formation in the southwestern region of the RS. A profile of Argissolo Vermelho and other of Neossolos Quartzarenico were analyzed, both formed on quartz sandstones of the Botucatu formation. Through morphological, physical, chemical and mineralogical analysis was possible to verify the process of allochthonous pedogenesis by higher clay content in the B horizon of the Argissolo profile and confirmed by the absence of clay forming minerals in the rock and in the presence of ilmenite in the pedogenetic horizons and its absence in the rock matrix. The environmental conditions suggest that the ilmenite originates from alteration of the surrounding volcanic rocks.
