Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the role of procurement in identifying and managing the intra- and inter-organisational issues which impact supply chain resilience. Achieving resilience along the supply chain in today’s turbulent business environment requires efforts from both internal and external elements of the extended enterprise. Design/methodology/approach – The systematic literature review was conducted between 2000 and 2013 with the objective being to answer the single research question proposed. To do so, a content analysis based on the literature was applied to 30 selected papers. Findings – The study revealed that procurement activities do make a significant contribution to creating supply chain resilience. Emerging from the literature review, certain intra- and inter-organisational issues were identified that could impact supply chain resilience. Also the possible actions that procurement could take to enable the enhancement of supply chain resilience were identified. Rese...

Information technology has changed the patterns of coordination among the different linkages of supply-chains. Coordination can be understood as the ability to transfer information, incentives and controls throughout the sequential stages which integrate the set of activities indispensable to serve the market (FARINA & ZYLBERSZTAJN, 1994). The sum of these stages is currently known as Supply-Chains. This paper discusses cases of adopting a specific information technology, EDI (Electronic Data Interchange), as an integration tool between the food industry and retailers. It was found that the adoption process is too recent to measure significative quantitative results, but it is possible to observe changes in the frequency of stockouts, level of stocks and increased sales as a consequence of greater merchandise availability. Qualitative changes can be seen such as the alterations of the traditional salesmen function, the greater interaction among technical areas with shared learning of the new uses of this technology and the role of trust between business partners.

Abstract The purpose of this article was to analyze the private label strategies on food retailers, considering cases of English and Brazilian retail chains. After literature review, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six retailers in England and in Brazil. Secondary data were collected, followed by documental and content analysis. The main differences between the countries occur due to retail structure, time of private label offering, customers’ profile and preferences. Factors related to culture, legislation, economy and management of product mix describe other differences. In both countries, different store formats are used for reaching different target markets. It is also possible to notice the importance, in both countries, of positioning strategies, segmentation, brands, product mix, location, image, store environment, marketing mix and selection and evaluation of private label suppliers. Implications include suggestions for food retailers. Keywords Private labels. Food retail. Brand strategies. England. Brazil.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to characterize the cross-functional integration processes between marketing and logistics, while considering five basic elements: boundary spanning activities, integration factors, level of integration, formality/informality and impacts of integration. Design/methodology/approach – After an extensive literature review, five case studies were performed and in-depth interviews conducted. Both within-case and cross-case analysis was performed to better understand the cross-functional integration processes between marketing and logistics. Findings – A characterization of cross-functional integration in the form of a managerial framework was proposed. This framework presents the elements in a process view, instead of disconnected parts of the integration processes. The framework and process perspective helps to explain the integration process, the roles and impacts of integration within organizations, while considering cultural formality and informality. Research limitat...

The purpose of this paper is to understand the role of resilience enablers in combating counterfeits in the medicine supply chain based on a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). The objective is also to help practitioners and scholars as the review revealed that little research has been conducted on selecting and implementing practices to improve resilience to counterfeiting.,Based on the literature review, a content analysis was performed for 84 selected papers to explore the potential relationship among resilience enablers and counterfeit anti-measures.,This paper contributes to Supply Chain Resilience (SCR) research by summarizing the highly fragmented literature concerning how to combat counterfeiting. The SLR indicated reengineering, collaboration, visibility, innovation, SCR culture and trust as six key enablers to combat counterfeit medicines and identified literature gaps. Moreover, the paper discusses other resilience enablers which have been less studied in the literature and shows new avenues of research.,This paper is limited in that it is an exploratory literature review and focuses only on three databases over the past 15 years. Furthermore, counterfeit is a rapidly evolving issue and anti-measure studies require frequent surveillance concerning new discoveries.,The main contribution of this paper is to provide a better understanding of enablers most often associated with counterfeit anti-measures, which, therefore, might help to increase resilience to counterfeit medicines. Moreover, research gaps involving enablers less associated with anti-measures are presented.

The cross-functional integration among Marketing, Logistics, and Production activities is essential for the coordination of demand and supply, and the interfunctional alignment represents an important step towards achieving it. The objective of this paper is to identify the main points of contact among Marketing, Logistics, and Production. Based on a literature review, a semi-structured guide was used for conducting 19 interviews in a beverage company. Based on the content analysis of the transcripts, many points of contact were found between the dyads formed by the three functions, and only one was found within the triad - the Product Launch. However, it was observed that the respondents indirectly mentioned other points of contact that required the assistance of a third function such as forecasting, promotion, transportation (delivery), service level, production planning/scheduling, logistics capacity planning, and packaging. Among the contributions of this article, it is possible to highlight the deeper understanding of the cross-functional alignment among the three functions at the tactical and operational level and their contribution to the achievement of broader organizational goals, such as the service level offered to customers.
